SH-203 / NEC 7200 / PIO DVR 215

Postby vix11 on Thu Jun 05, 2008 12:10 pm

Hi again
Its been another year and I still haven't completed that final set up of my pc aaaaaarrrrggg ](*,) I posted up last year asking about the dvr 212 and I for some reason I didn't buy anything I just got busy (doing ermm...nothing!)

My original Q was to decide on a couple of models and to see whether the 212 was worth waiting for. I never really found out. But I have now come to a stage where I actually need to use the PC I started to build as this one gets constantly used and I hardly get the time to use it (the only reason I'm on it now is cause I'm temp unemployed- BTW if anyone wants a junior/trainee let me know, I have a DipHE in Business IT and passed the first semester of CCNA Cert. very keen to learn further and practically).!

Anyway so I did my research, the polls say go for SH-203, Before I read the polls I read some reviews and this was entered onto my shortlist and now is a definite. Only prob is I have to order it as no one locally stocks the ivory color (don't ask why I chose to go horrible beige!) so the next two options were the dvr 212 but then I replaced that with the 215 (plz comment if thats a wise move as I couldn't see much of a difference myself) and the third one I narrowed down is the NEC AD 7200.

Really what I am after is some quality and fewer if not any errors and just need an experts justification when comparing these three. One person I spoke to said that the NEC (or Optiarc) is better for sl and pio for dl. Which to me doesn't mean much 2 me. I guess I would be normally using sl? so does this narrow my choices down to the samsung and nec?

One last thing on the sh-203 what is difference between B/D/N/P and any other letters, I couldn't see much difference in the models myself.

I'll shut up now and let you give me some advice so I can pick one and get it over with.

Thanx.

The N and P have LightScribe and the B and D do not. From there though, I don't remember what the differences are.

I've heard good things about the Pioneer and NEC drives. Unfortunately, I can't speak from personal experience on either.

Thanx for clearing that for me Ian. it helps to know what exactly I am getting. I think the difference between b and d or n and p might be a slight variation in write speed or something if I can think of the stats correctly off the top of my head (I had another look after what you clarified to me).

Well from what I have researched I see the samsung is a much faster drive of the three but only marginally, the pioneers have had a long history of being at the top keeping a good track record and the nec/optiarc model i'm looking at seems to be favored a lot. I've been told that as an all rounder I should go for the pioneer. Which I made a decision on till I inquired and found out the only drive of three available to me tomorrow in store is the nec. I've tried most of the places and I can only phone up all the locals to see if it is stocked but not shown online.

Would really like some help from ppl who know their stuff like expertise n all in this area. What I need now is to be able to justify whether its worth buying and waiting for the arrival of either the pioneer or samsung over just walking into my local and buying the nec tomorrow. Time isn't of the essence. I would like to get it done asap but I don't want to compromise on anything so that throws out the timing issue altogether.

So has anyone got any thoughts on this?

Thanx
