HP 630i - is it a BenQ or a LiteON?

Postby dolphinius_rex on Tue Nov 09, 2004 2:01 pm

I've seen several people claim that their HP 630i's are in fact BenQ OEM's and not LiteON OEM's. All of my own sources only show the LiteON as being the OEM, and I have a hard time believing HP would ditch NEC as a regular OEM supplier for BenQ... although I was surprised to see LiteON OEM'ing for HP as well.

Does anyone know if both company's are supplying drives to HP?

HP had used LiteOn for the 530 series (8x). Also use them for the drives installed in HP computers. So it doesn't surprise me for them to use LiteOn. I know that there exists a 630 firmware created by LiteOn.

I think that it's also likely that there could be different versions of the 630, some by LiteOn and some by BenQ.

Remember Memorex's True8x? The NEC version was True8xn and the LiteOn version was True8xI, and having been an owner of a HP CD drive, I know that the little letters they attach to the end of the name can make quite a difference... I've heard of a 630vi (or was it iv?) being a BenQ.

Well, the person who is claiming his HP 630i is a BenQ drive says that it's an HP 630i revision 'C' I believe.

I hate grab bag drives even more then I hate grab bag media!
