about the Sony DRU500A...

Postby aznsound on Sat Dec 21, 2002 4:18 am

i have read some reviews on the Internet (don't know how dependable they are) and they said that this drive is full of stuff that prevents users from violating copyright laws because it's from Sony... is this true...? i thinking of getting this drive but i can't get over the copy protection stuff... or is this drive no different from other writers...?

Those are simply false rumors started by people who don't know what they are talking about, that have now been propagated around the net!

The only "copy-protection" on the Sony is that it is limited to 2x when ripping CSS protected DVDs. Hardly a problem.

Congratulations!

Make sure to upgrade the firmware to 1.0f:
That will help with burning to some brands of DVD-R.
It also enables 4X DVD+R burning (as opposed to the advertised 2.4X) for FREE!

Will nero automatically let me pick 4X if the media can support it? I only have these Memorex discs and they list no speed on em (DVD+R) and it does 2.4x fine, but i can't choose 4x in nero when i go to burn...i do have 1.0f installed

with no media inserted it lets me choose 2.6x and 3.1 ....

bumpage on the 4x question. with no media nero only lets me pick up to 3.1x with the memorex dvd+r it only lets me choose 2.4x (tho its most likely only 2.4x media cuz 4x is hard to come by and usually explicitly on the media). i heard the sony drive locks out the faster speeds automatically unless it detects media that will work...true / false? shouldnt nero let me pick the higher speeds with NO media installed?
