Any BIG improvement in writing Verbatim +RDL since NEC 3500?

Postby frank1 on Sat Nov 19, 2005 5:54 am

I am still using my "old" NEC 3500A with latest firmware 2.1A to burn Verbatim DVD+R DL 2,4x of MID code MKM-001
with rather good quality (not a single freeze in a movie at the layer break in my standalone DVD players)
According to this page:
tp://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/3500.html
the 2.1A firmware contains the newest 1.27 writing strategy for DVD+R9

I dont burn anymore any others MID codes like Ricoh and especially
no "Ritek-D01"

I like to know if to your knowledge
there has been a big improvement in the writing quality of these Verbatim DVD+R DL @2,4x

- I am not talking about overspeedeing theese MKM-001 or writing the new MKM-003 -

with the newer burners like for example:
NEC 3520, 3540 and now 4550
Pioneer A09 and 110
Plextor PX-716A
BenQ 1640, Plextor PX-740
- For each of these burners I mean by using the latest available firmware -

Yes, I saw this BenQ 1620 B7W9 writing a MKM001 @4X with an amazing quality (in the facts, the better quality was achieve @4X not @2.4X !) :

But the drive is somehow special, giving more 99 scores on SL discs (max PIF < 3 on -mainly- Plextor DVD-R 8X TYG02) than others common BenQ 1620 !

I will buy some of them in a few weeks, since they are around 4 euros a piece now on svp or os-mediatrade and tests myself on my 1620.

I believe BenQ 1640 (=PX-740=Sony DRU-810), LG 4163 and PX-716 can write MKM001 @4X with good quality too. You don't need to wait 45min now, only ~29min, it's a good point I think.

I bought today (it's nearly XMas ...) my first pack of Verbatim DVD+R DL 8x certified of MID code MKM-003.
I am still using my old NEC 3500 with firmware 2.1A to burn the MKM-001 at the moment.

Do you think that it is worth buying a more recent burner in order
to burn these new MKM-003 at the same speed of 2,4x CLV ??
[maximum allowed speed with this 2.1A firmware is 4x CLV]

Or the is the double layer burning quality on Verbatim DL discs sufficient with the NEC 3500 fw 2.1A ?

I hope it is. I have the same drive and am in no rush to upgrade. ;)
