Asus CRW-4816A not liking TDK 48x discs

Postby zzed on Fri May 09, 2003 4:47 pm

Ok, so here are the facts. Drive = Asus CRW-4816A 48/16/48. I had been using both Sony 32x discs and TDK 32x discs (unknown manufacturers). Costco had a 100pk spindle of TDK 48x for $20 after rebate, so a picked up one. I've gone through about 25 discs, and nary a single disc has gone perfectly. I've tried different speeds (down to 16x), different data/audio, and no matter what, the disc either fails to burn, burns but takes extra long to finish the lead in/out, or has errors on the burn or lead in/out. Updating the firmware = No effect. Going back to the Sony or TDK 32x discs works fine. Any explanation? If not, any recommendations for media I should look for?

Yes, I'm on v1.13 of the firmware, which is the newest available (at least according to the usa.asus.com site). I even tried downgrading back to v1.11 of the firmware, but for one reason or another, the windows-based flash tool Asus provides won't work.
