BenQ DW1640 Still available anywhere?

Postby cosmichippo on Sat Jun 24, 2006 1:55 pm

I'm finally gonna move into this century and replace my Pioneer DVR-103.

It seems that there have been problems with each new BenQ model after the 1620 and 1640. Is there any place or way to get the DW 1640 new in the box or new and rebadged at a reasonable price anymore? I know that someone mentioned that Fry's had a rebadged drive a few weeks ago that was probably a 1640.

Also, is there a concensus on which firmware and what media seem to be ideal?

Thanks for any help,
Mike

I wouldn't suggest killing yourself trying to find a DW1640. I just recently got a DW1650 to accompany my DW1640, and so far the DW1650 has outperformed the DW1640 in everything I've used it for.

I have the 1655 (the 1650 w/LightScribe), and it kicks all kinds of butt :)
BenQ 1655, BenQ 1620, LG 4167, Plex PX-716SA, Samsung SH-S162L, SH-S182M, Pioneer 111D, Lite-On SHM-165H6S and 1.9TB of HDDs to feed 'em and an X2/4800 to crunch for 'em.

at the Compusa near me, the Norwood Micro box has a DW1640 in it. (You can open it to check and see) The Compusa box is a DW1650.
