CD-RW burner for older machines

Postby cd993433 on Sat Jan 22, 2005 2:54 am

Hello Everyone,

I am trying to buy a low cost CD-RW burner for two older PCs and prefer an external burner so I can move between them. My target is Lite-On LTR - 52327SX (USB 2.0).

I was wondering if the machines can run this burner since the burner require "Pentium II 350 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 100 MB HDD" according to Lite-On. Below are my machine's specs:

Machine (1) (main user)

OS: Win98
330 MHz
64 RAM
300 MB HDD free space

Machine (2)

OS: Win 98
450 MHz
96 RAM
3 G free HDD free space

I suppose both of them are running USB 1.1. The speed is not a major concern (according to other threads, the speed will be down to 4x but that is OK). My major concern is whether the machines can run the burner in the first place.

Does anyone with experience for older machines? Please let me know. Or, will there be other alternative burners if this one is not suitable?

Thank you very much!

:)

It should work fine. I'd recommend a USB2 PCI card for full speed burning though.

Thanks for the advice. I will see how much I can tolerate the speed. Will be looking for PCI card too.
