Burning DVD video files with 6.3.1.6 -- encoded by Shrink?

Postby SkaarjMaster on Tue Aug 16, 2005 11:16 am

I'm having a lot of "fun" burning coasters at home (XP system).;)

I'm trying to make a backup of the Alien vs Predator movie with DVD Shrink and finally upgraded to version 2 and got a decent copy on my hard drive to play correctly without any texture problems in PowerDVD5. Now I need to burn with Nero to a DVD-R (Ritek, purple/pink bottom, good quality ones). I tried by choosing DVDVideo1 or whatever that is and got errors on my Toshiba DVD player. What DVD option should I choose (UDF/ISO?)? What settings apart from default should I choose? Anything else about burning DVDs this way in Nero that I need to know so I don't burn another coaster.

I wanted to make sure the encoding worked before burning another coaster, but maybe I should have just let it go like I've always done in the past, hehe. I have a thread on this at Digital Video forums as well. Thank you.

EDIT: This is exactly what I did and it didn't work:

1)make sure your drive has the latest firmware loaded.

2)do a "transfer rate" test using the CD DVD speed utility, it should be nice and smooth.

3)if the transfer rate test fails or looks very poor, you either need to buy better media or burn it at a slower speed.

I'm already using excellent Ritek RiData media (the good kind before they went bad) and I've had no trouble burning DVD-Rs before. Maybe I need to try burning at 2x instead of 4x max? My drive has the latest firmware that isn't a bad release

So, I did do it right and DVD-Video IS the correct thing to choose? What if I tried a DVD-Video Files in Nero Express and put all the VTS files in the Video_TS folder? Would that be better?

well if you've burned it correctly and your player is giving you errors, then your player might not like those ritek discs. BTW, I never thought there was a time when ritek was even considered good. I would never buy it again personally. Is your burner capable of setting the book type to dvd-rom? (for +r discs). I think thats the most compatable way to go.

My player can only play DVD-Rs (well, at least not DVD+Rs)......it's a Toshiba. It's never had problems with these discs before either. I'm getting Taiyo Yuden when these are gone, but I have quite a few left and it's either coasters or good burns to use them up first.

Apparently, what I did was the correct way but the burn just didn't work. Next I'm going to try a few things (some obvious that I didn't try yet and others just WTF and why didn't I try it earlier):

1. Here's the WTF one >> try playing the disc I just burned (get it out of the rather clean trash can in the computer room.....good thing I didn't throw it away in the kitchen) with PowerDVD5 and see what happens.

2. Try burning at 2X from the hard drive and see what happens.

3. Try just letting DVDShrink 3.2 encode and burn with Nero on its own.

What do you guys think?

Nero sucks for burning DVD-Video,use DVDDecrypter(search Google) to burn. You can select to burn with DVDDecrypter in DVDShrink.I agree with eric, buy some DVD+R and set the booktype to DVD-ROM.I have a Toshiba DVD player and it plays DVD-ROM perfectly.

OK, so maybe I'll try burning with the latest DVD Decrypter (3.5.4.0) first. Are there any settings besides default I need to know about. I'd like to try it by just grabbing the files on my HD first if possible. Yes, I will try changing the book type and get some DVD+Rs in the future. This booktype change won't affect me still using the DVD-Rs to burn will it as I have quite a few left to use?

Can someone please tell me how to burn hard drive files using DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0? I can't seem to change the source to the hard drive location and what mode do you do it in? I can't make head or tails of the DVD Decrypter Guide at the Digital Video forum. Also, I don't even see the setting in Preferences in DVD Shrink 3.2 to go straight to burn it with DVD Decrypter after encoding, so I can't do it this way either.

i think that with DVD Decrypter you can only burn image files, no ?

Yes, I found the setting in DVD Shrink to encode as an ISO and then use DVD Decrypter to burn it. Let's call this option 4, but it'll be done next. Here's an update on those above 3 items:

1. Yes, the 4X burn does play in PowerDVD5 but it still looks bad with the textures trying to focus in and out (you guys do know what I'm talking about here right?).

2. The 2X burn plays on the computer in PowerDVD5 as well as the DVD player. It is the best one yet and only has extremely slight texture focusing problems, but they are still noticeable.

3. I might try this after Option 4 (above), but I'm not sure yet.

4. Above.

One thing I was wondering is if this DVD being a full screen version makes any difference? On my HDTV, the DVDs are supposed to play in HD-mode automatically I think. Or maybe only the wide-screen versions do this.

It sounds like the problem is the media, get some Verbatim or Fuji...look for 'Made In Japan'.Please try option 4(DVDDecrypter) and tell us the results.
As for the aspect ratio:that will make no differance when burning or viewing.

All right, trying #4 now!

As far as the media, probably the Ritek works with older DVDs but not with some of newer ones. Is that a possibility?

3. I've had it with this DVD. I'm not even going to try this, since Nero sucks at burning DVDs

4. Same result with this option. I think it's either my media with the newer DVDs or burner with newer DVDs or just the combo with newer DVDs, but I do have a few questions.

One of the options in Shrink says something about compression and sharp image. I have this unchecked. Would that make a difference in my case?

I just left DVD Decrypter at the default settings. Should I set the I/O to ASPI - WNASPI32.DLL or ASAPI - ASAPI.DLL instead of SPTI - Microsoft? Also, in ISO Write Mode I have it set to Auto, SAO, Auto. Is this correct and are there any other Decrypter settings that need to be changed?

I do still have the ISO image on my HD as well as the previous Files from the Nero burn (these play fine in PowerDVD5 on my computer). Can I play the ISO file with anything? Thank you again.

5. Well, I tried burning using this guide http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/backup% ... Shrink.pdf and it still doesn't work. Same results as the others.

I guess I'll just wait until I get Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs in a month or two and do it then.
