DVD quality issues after a burn?

Postby Intimidator on Wed Jan 05, 2005 11:31 am

I have noticed and read a few things and wanted to hear other peoples thoughts as well. Some DVD media will change colors when the media is burned when looking at the bottom of the disc. However, an actual store bought DVD will remain silver usually and you cannot tell from looking at the bottom where it was burned.

Question: How does the quality of media compare in these to cases? Is it better to use media that does not change colors? Why or why not? If so what are some brands /media codes to consider?

Professional DVDs are pressed, not burned, which is why there is no color differences. There is no recordable media that does not change color; the laser burns data into the dye so color change is inevitable.

Pressed Media

Postby steelly on Wed Jan 05, 2005 12:00 pm

When you buy CD's or DVD's in the store the information is pressed onto the disc. It doesn't matter if it's audio or video they press the end result onto the disc just like old fashion vinyl records. When you write to a CD or DVD you are burning the information onto a disc. You can see your starts and stops very easily on a writable DVD as where I have a problem with CD's, but I have a Plextor drive and it compresses more information onto a CD then the 700MB's allows.

lets see if i can repeat the answer too

when you burn a writeable piece of media it will change colors

the data on cd or dvd you buy in store is pressed on so you do not see a change in color

I can easily tell how much data is "pressed" on to a store bought CD or DVD disc... but I'm not exactly your regular consumer either
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

2 things here.
Hmm how exact ??? (and is that includeing multiple layer disc's. ?)

Makes me wonder if you really have a life these days.
Hmm in Germanny there still is a show called Wetten Dass.
Which has all times of people who can do weird stuff and some
well known celebrity (at least for the german area !) has to bet if the person can actually can do the weird stuff.
Makes me wonder when we will see on the German television ?

Actually some people would be absolutely amazed at the horrible scanning results a lot of these so called store bought DVDs gives as opposed to one you burn yourself. I know I was.
