Firmware update informations pls :)

Postby omega on Sun Mar 16, 2003 7:14 pm

Once again hello everyone. I'm just wondering about a few things. I recently ordered the new LG GCE-8520, and was hearing about these firmware updates i now have questions.

1: where do i find new firmware for my burner?
2: what do the firmware updates offer for better performance?
3: if i update the firmware, how do i return the drive to it's original firmware version?
4: how do i check what firmware version i currently have?

please answer in order :)

thank you all

1. I'm not sure there is new firmware for that drive yet, but these people keep up with firmware, and I'm sure when a new firmware is released they will post a link to it quickly:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?c ... ufactor=16

2. Often they improve media compatibility, allowing the drive to make better quality burns with a wider variety of media. Sometimes they enable new features like Mt. Rainier.

3. Recent LG drives use MediaTek chipsets, so you can use MtkFlash to back up your firmware:

http://www.firmware-flash.com/~dhc014/mtkflash.htm

4. One way is to run Nero InfoTool, select the drive in the drop-down box, click the "Drive" tab, and you will see the Firmware Version in the upper right corner of the information display.

Replaced mtkflash link with a link to our own dhc014's mtkflash page.

If you do make a backup with mtkflash, please send it to me.

The last time I used mtkflash, I used version 1.48 because that is what I had lying around. But I don't know any reason not to use the newest version 1.62. Do you have any comments, dhc014?

There you go, omega, you may be the first to contribute the new firmware. :)

Yeah, try 1.62. If you haven't found it yet, see here: http://dhc014.rpc1.org/mtkflash.htm

An hour ago I already went back and changed my original link to point to your page instead (although I used the old firmware-flash name). I don't know what I was thinking, linking someone else's mtkflash page. 8)

Whoops, kind of skimmed. Don't worry about linking to other pages. My page does not really explain mtkflash as well and in depth as OCFreak's instructions and I also made a flashing guide on rpc1.org. My mtkflash page is mainly for downloading, but I put the explaination of how to backup there only because it is so important...

okay i just got the new LG 52x24x52 drive in the mail today. i will attempt to copy the firmware it has come with. btw, any ideas why Nero DriveSpeed detected my drive as 40x(though there is a maximum option) . it also said 52x burned when i burned somthing. so why is it detecting 40x ??

will post my firmware soon.

Two possible reasons why it may be detecting only 40x:

1) You had an audio or mode-2 disc in the drive when the auto-detect sequence ran; some discs of these types will only read at slow speeds in some drives.

2) I've noticed that some drives denote the 52x as "maximum" then the next speed down from that as the maximum stated one in DriveSpeed. Maybe nothing to worry about.

Try putting in an original data (not game/VCD or audio) disc and doing a "Detect". This might bring up the 52x.
