How can I re-enable WinXP built-in burning? Record tab gone

Postby Coyote on Tue Dec 03, 2002 9:44 pm

I have Nero and InCD installed. I'm trying to burn a CD directly from within the new Microsoft Movie Maker 2 Beta. But it requires the built-in burning support of WinXP. I right-click my cd-rw drive, but the recording tab to enable recording is missing. I checked in Services.msc and the IMAPI CD Burning Service is set to "automatic" and it is started. help please.

Find admin tools and locate componant services then track down under system and you should see something like 'enable cd burning' reboot and you should have the record tab back when you right click and go properties on a your CD burner.

I looked in admin tools/component services, but there is no "enable cd burning". Where else can I look for it?

Because Movie Maker 2 Beta allows burning the CD in HighMAT format so future DVD players recognize the content. I don't know much about HighMAT format, but isn't it different then just manually burning a WMV file to the CD-R? I'd rather use Nero to burn the WMV files, but it doesn't have a HighMAT option.

Look in Administrative Tools | Services | IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service.

The Properties dialog will allow you to manually or automatically start the built-in CD burning capability.

hmm...I have IMAPI service enabled, but still no recording tab. I noticed IMAPI service disables itself, everytime I reboot the system.

To eliminate one potential source of conflicts, did you try removing Nero and InCD? Are you sure MM doesn't install any burning plugin? WMP is notorious for that, even 9.0 beta on XP.

Go to my computer, right click on your CD-RW, go to property click on recording and checked the box (enable CD recording on this drive).

Recording tab is not there to select. I still haven't figured out why it isn't there.

I don't think the inbuilt burning is compatible with INCD.
Try uninstalling it and see if it come's back.
At least you'll know for sure.
There's also a registry key to check (part of an old post I got from some-
where):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives

– All CD drives show up in same key

– “Drive Type” value determines whether drive is capable of writing and rewriting

01=CD-R Drive

02=CD-RW Drive

03=Write Disabled

I've never touched IMAPI settings on my XP Pro box, and InCD is working fine. However, for troubleshooting purposes, I suggested removing InCD in my former message, which Coyote apparently ignored.

I'm not using WMP or MM, so I can't be specific, but I recall vaguely from another thread that either WMP or MM can override Windows burning settings. Hence this should be checked. Well, one could also remove MM to see if the recording tab reappears, but apparently there are no ways of uninistalling some MS toys (like WMP 9.0) completely.

If everything else fails, one could compare CD registry entries with those of a "clean" XP machine.
