Need help with ILO DVDR04 recorder

Anyone familiar with this machine? I've got some issues.

This is a rebaged Liteon 5101 recorder. I recieved on for xmas and am very happy with it. I have all ready converted 6 vcr programs to dvd. What is your problem?

This is my 1st issue:

Using a Memorex DVD+R recordable disc, after appx. 18 mins of recording a homemade VHS cassette made from a camcorder recording, the dvd recorder stopped recording saying that the material was protected. Upon trying to play back what might have been recorded, it says invalid disc. It also says invalid disc when trying to finalize, erase, and/or play in another dvd player.
Also, I have the following components and would like to know the most funtional way to hook it all together for optimal use: digital cable box, sony vhs recorder, sony dvd player, sony kp-57hw40 projection tv.
There was also an unlabeled disc in the box with no information on what it might be for. It does nothing in the recorder, player, or PC.
Which Type/Brand of disc do you recommend? I have bought some Memorex DVD+RW also, but have not tried to do anything since.
I'll probably will have more questions, but this sounds like a days full for now. Trying to get ready for the LSU game tomorrow.
I'm in a 3-point stance. Can you help?
