Fixed a problem which occurred when using a DVD as backup target

Craig,

I am not the one who sent you DVD...

I found above from NERO HP. Does anybody know anything more about the second problem fixed on 6.0.0.1? What kind of problem exitsted on BacItup software comes with Nero version 6.6.0.0? I used 6.0.0.0 to back up the data I have had difficulties to restore.

Anyway, the first two recovery dics were DVD RW media, and I was getting a lot of read errors with these two discs. IN the end, I had to try and copy the content from the disc and create new ones.

To do this, I put the disc's in the Recorder, Use Nero DriveSpeed to slow down the read speed, and increased the number of retry's on the read to copy the contents from the disc's to the Hard Drive. And then I burned them back to DVD. Using this process, I was then able to do a full recovery with the discs.

Craig,
I made a copy of disc 3 which seems to have a problem and got a mysterious "Create New Structure 50%" message. I got successfully copy data on disc 3 to a new disc and tried to resotre but no luck.

Also, I tried following coaxili's method, but I had already used version 1.083 from the first time and no luck to me as expected...
Is this something related to the fact I used 6.6.0.0 to back up the Data? Home page mentioned that 6.6.0.0 had a problem with wiriting data on DVD media.

I have a same "Create New Structures: 50%" problem with restoring from DVD.

Problem is solved for me! Follow this instructions:

0. Copy NRESTORE.EXE (last version is 1.083) from newest NERO BURNING ROM update (download it from developer site or get prepared of necessary files from attachment) to floppy disc with configuration files.
1. Boot from first backup DVD
2. Then NRESTORE.EXE is started choose from menu Quit to get Caldera DOS system console.
3. Insert prepared floppy disc with newest NRESTORE.EXE
4. Start it from floppy by typing b:\NRESTORE or any way
5. If newest version NRESTORE.EXE is run then use it properly for restoring.
6. Voala!

Testing on Windows NT 4.0 Server SP6, file system is NTFS, DVD+R,RW TDK (backup contains two discs), restores full partition D:

IMHO BackItUp of early version have big problem with restoring from bootable DVD and NTFS. While making backup It haven’t a warning. Also Nero is not warning about it.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Welcome back CCampbell.

I just want to know how the things are going with the dvd discs that you were receiving from somebody who had a similar issue with what I had. You mentioned that you had to clean up each disc and make each copy so that all the set become readable. I want to know if all the readable discs you might have created already work with the current NRESTORE program to restore, 16 (or more?), DVD disc data. It seems that somebody who were trying to restore data with 2 or 3 discs were able to successfully restore data but someone like me and other were not.

Your continuous follow up on this case would be fully appreciated.

Hi Ken2,

I've sent the disc's back to the customer, but have not yet heard a response. But when I restored the 16 DVD+R discs on a clean 80Gig HD in our lab, all 16 restored properly. Of course, my Motherboard was not the same as theres so I got error messages when I attempted to boot from it, but all the data was readable and accesable.

Craig

"Create New Structures: 50%" issue

Postby KEN2 on Sun Jun 19, 2005 11:40 am

Craig,

Please do allow me to bring up what I had already brought up.
The facts I am still not sure about on the current version on BackItUp is

1) The mysterious message "Create New Structures: 50%" which shows up after 3rd disc back up finishes and that is the end of restoration process although entire data is packed in 26 DVDs.

2) Progress, which you can confirm with the progress percentage figure on 3rd DVD back up is a bit faster than previous 2 discs. Back up process of first 2 dics starts like 0.7%, 1.4%.... but third one is starts from 1.2%, and continues to 2.4%...etc.

I did try all suggestions from you, such as cleaning discs and copying to clean discs and other posters but I did not get a luck on this.

I would appreciate it if you shared your thougts on these symptoms above.

Hi Ken,

I've not run into that issue before, I could not find any issues on that.

I do know of an issue that occurs from BIU 1.0.0.3 to 1.0.0.5 where if you backup files that are larger than 2gig the restore process was not possible because they have been stored in ISO format, but ISO allows only files smaller than 2GB. There is a possibility to restore, but only inhouse, meaning only by our Engineers. :-?

And updating to our latest BIU does not resolve this restore issue.

Did you have any files that were larger than 2GB?

Craig,

Thanks for your reply.
I believe there is no files more than 2GB contained in any DVD. But does 2GB issue cause some problem like what I previously described?

Update

Postby KEN2 on Sun Aug 14, 2005 11:01 am

Craig,

Thanks for your support as always.
I have found the update on Backitup as follows and download it. It seems that although Backitup itself has been updated in the way it may solve my problem with Harddisk restore, Nrestore (DOS) portion seems to be remained as it is. Is this just me or this is the way it is intended, meaning that there is nothing wrong with Nrestore but Backitup might have created the problem prompting to insert next disc, which was corrected at the current version?

Thanks,
Ken2

Hi
Can anyone tell me if data can be restored to a partition which size is bigger then the one the data was backed up from?

Today I tried BackItUp for the first time and it's really great. I thought I could restore my backed up system partition to another partition which was a little smaller then the original one. But the program wouldn't let me although the destination partition had more space then the DVD with backed up data. That's why I'm asking if data can be restored to a partition which size is bigger then the one the data was backed up from.
Thanks
