version 3.55 and 3.61 don't work in my LG combo drive :( all of the previous versions worked. So I'm stuck with 3.50 for now.

My understanding is that the Piodata kernal and firmware is developed in house by Pioneer and released for their Piodata line. The BIOS updates and change logs for the Pioneer and Piodata lines appear to be identical.

Following your posts for awhile it appears you don't use DVD+R so I guess the only benefit to you would be the scanning.

Besides the faceplate I see no differences between a Piodata 108DX and Pioneer 108. I have examined the hardware and it's the same. The firmware is all developed by Pioneer so this is all "true" Pioneer. The error reporting is just disabled in CD/DVD Speed for "Pioneer".

Sure can. You just need the Piodata kernel and the Piodata firmware of your choosing. I would suggest the latest Piodata 1.18 or the RPC1/rip-lock removed Piodata 1.18. Really is the best of both worlds. Pioneer quality burns with +R bitsetting. I guess the only downside is the bitsetting for +R is automatic and can't be changed, but for me I never change it anyway. All of my other drives are set for -ROM by default. I don't see a reason to not set a +R to -ROM.

This is only for the 108/A08 drives. Don't try this on a XL. There is not a Piodata XL drive so XL owners are out of luck on this one. It is also reversible. Then using the latest CD/DVD Speed you get quality scans that actually look reasonably accurate on the Pio drive. Give it a try... :D
