New Samsung SW-252B Firmware

Postby Ian on Sat Mar 22, 2003 10:54 pm

Samsung released two new firmware updates for the SW-252B today.

R702 was posted on their korean website. It's supposedly for the domestic market, but it does work on the SW-252B's sold here in the US. I can't read Korean, but you can get more info and download it
here.

R701 is available on their English website. According to their webpage, the changelog is:

Improvement: It supports Maunt Rainier format.

You can get more info and download it here.

I'm sorta confused on why they released two different firmware versions. If you know why, please share with everyone.

I saw the SW-252 at a Best Buy in Lynchburg, VA (of all places) this past weekend. :)
My solution to the Plextor vs. Lite-On debate: Buy 'em both! :)

How does the 8Mb version stack up against the Lite-On speed and media-compatibility wise?

I'll be honest, the buffer size is damn attractive, but I don't know if it's worth it. I've thrown my sound requirement out the window, let's face it, it was just silly at 52x...

I don't want to spoil the review, but their writing speeds are very close. However, the Samsung's media compatibility is not as good. I haven't tested the writing quality yet so I dunno about that.

Not a problem. You definitely know how to keep us coming back for more, Ian. Thanks for all your input, I'm gonna try to grab a 52x Buslink/Lite-On tonight at Best Buy or CompUSA. :D

Thanks again, Ian!
