CD-RW now just hangs !! HELP!

Postby Railfan on Fri Apr 09, 2004 8:21 am

Hi,

I'm in trouble!

I have an old 166 Pentium with a relatively small HD of only 4GIG. For the last 8 months or so I've been freeing up my HD by archiving as much as I can on CD-RW's with a new SAMSUNG RW 52-24-52 drive. The CD-RW's have been burnt using InCD.

O.S. is Windows 98.

So, far it's been working really well. I have 4 x CD-RW's (Verbatim) with my C & D Drives backed-up & regularly backing up OK every 2-3 weeks or so.

One of the CD-RW's is being used exclusively for my railroad photos; so far over 1,000 of them. Most are .jpg & just a few .bmp. I've been adding to them regularly & unfortunately no longer have them on my HD.

But all of a sudden, last week I was about to add 20 more; inserted the CD-RW & the computer just hang. Ended up after ages of looking at an hour glass; the horrible blue screen.

I've tried using windows explorer, various graphics programmes and it's always the same. I can only start explorer or a graphics programme before I put in the disc. Then as soon as I close the disc tray, the whole system freezes up.

The computer will only come good after I eject the disc & reboot.

What can any one suggest I do?

Once again, HELP!!

Railfan try reading the CD in some other machine. If you dont have access and would like to recover then you can Iso Buster which is free for personal use.Find it at www.isobuster.com

Hi Pranav,

No, I haven't tried it another PC. I'm not allowed to use anything from home at work.

I'll take your suggestion next week and see if a friend won't mind me trying it (I asked him before & he was worried about a virus).

However, I have now tried your second suggestion and downloaded IsoBuster. It installed OK & scanned the disk. After 10-15 minutes it actually came up with the CD's tree structure and what appears to be a complete list of my railroad photos. But, when I try to extract it says that function is disallowed. I know this is a silly question, but does that mean I have to pay for registration before I can proceed any further?

Thank you for your help so soon.

Railfan,IsoBuster is free for personal use.I dont know why you are unable to extract the files. You may try reading the help of the program and then checking whats the problem.

This is the latest scenario.

I've now tried it on a friend's computer which is less than one year old & high powered. The same problem arises. i.e. hanging for ages, and then finally a message that says disc may need cleaning ormay be corrupt. It just refuses to read it. My other CD-RWs still read OK.

Yes,
I can't understand why I can not extract the file using IsoBuster either. I thought that feature was basic enough to be included in the freeware. I'll now try & email Smart Projects & see what they have to say.

Yeah Railfan, you could try mailing Smart Projects.I guess that the CD-RW is damaged and so you are not able to extract the files.
