Bought another PX-708A from BestBuy today (made in Japan BTW).
Tried it out on my Asus A7N8X DLX as well as Asus A7V266E.
Both drives fail to write a CDR at about 60-80% point with the same error.

Does anyone have a Nforce2 board here? (even better A7N8X?)

I do. Which NF2 driver set are you using? Download the 1.16 drivers from the Asus website. The NVidia set has messed up IDE drivers, so the Asus 1.16 just use the default Microsoft IDE drivers, which work well.

Have you tried burning a CDR in DAO mode with more than 70min of data?

I have an Asus A7N8X Deluxe (PCB 1.04) and I don't have any problems writing audio or data at all. I have burned 76:30 minutes audio and 700+ (overburning) data on 700Mb verbatim CD-R. I'm not sure about the driver version (I used the install cd that came with the mainboard, NVIDIA nForce 2 Series Rev 44.03)

Just got off the phone with Plextor Tech Support. They're stumped, though they did mention that the DVD that came with the drive supposedly has a newer firmware version on it.
The drive I have is v1.00.
For the guys that have Nforce2 motherboard, are you using WinXP SP1 and were you burning at 40X? (32X works fine for me, but 40X fails)

P.S. Bhairavp: I did try v1.16 as well as Nvidia 2.45

The disk that came with the PX-708A has a newer firmware on it? I'll go looking through my disk, because I didn't find anything. I also have 1.00 on mine.

I don't see any firmware on my disk. Do you see any on yours? I think the guy may have gotten that confused with ASPI drivers?

I was Using WinXP SP1 (can be 2 already, I download all the upgrades automatically) with Nero 5.5.10.50 at 40x. The drive I have is made in China with firmware 1.00.

And with my drive came only 2 installation cd's (one with plextools, nero, InCD, etc and one with Pinnacle Studio 8) and NO DVD's (no blanc media).

can't get px-708a to work with nero 5.5 or 6

Postby babar on Thu Sep 11, 2003 4:31 pm

i tried nero 6.0.0.15 and nero 5.5.10.42. I keep getting the error "Could not perform the end of Disc-at-Once" at the very end of burn. Its very annoying. Wasted 4 coasters so far trying different things.

Need more details Babar......Are you burning DVD's or CD's? What type of files? What motherboard? Etc., Etc., Etc. Nero 5.5.10.42 seems to be working the best for almost everyone. Are you using Nero or Nero Express?

seagate barracuda v serial ata 120gb
samsung sm348b
plextor px-708a

Use Nero 6.0.0.11

That will work. You can get it from my server here:

Check your temp files. An overload of data here could cause problems.
Uninstall your all your burning software than go into the Nero program file and delete it. Reboot and reinstall Nero 5.5.10.42. Try a burn in Nero Express.

It's been a hairball here with burning software to work with PX-708A. I was also successful with the CD Creator included in the retail package.
Wasted a whole day with a pile of coasters before I found the right combo. Good Luck

I have a feeling people have conflicts with mobo chipsets (e.g. see post about NForce chipset boards) or other hardware/software conflicts, because it seems many have problems.

I tried Stomp 4.5 and Nero 6.0.0.11 and they both worked out of the box.
I haven't tried Easy CD or others yet, because Nero and Stomp satisfy my current DVD burning needs.

Speaking with Tech Support once again, I found that there is a new firmware coming out and it's available on DVD discs labeled Rev 7.01
If anyone has one of those discs, please post the firmware.

I just got an email back from Plextor Tech Support, only took about 20 minutes to get a reply.

Here you go:

When new firmware updates are available, they are released on the Plextor website. The 7.01 disc isn't even released yet.

Babar...With the trouble you've been having with the V. 1.01 I don't know if I want to upgrade when it becomes available.

Maybe it isn't the firmware as much as the Nero software. Have you noticed the bugs fixed in 6.0.0.15?

How was the speed Babar? Did you burn at 8X? Did you do the things I suggested earlier today? Were you burning DVD video files?

pjskeet: all i did was unistall nero 6.0.0.15 and install 6.0.0.11. i was able to burn successfully at 8x. my two successful burns so far with 6.0.0.11 have been 3750mb and 3900mb. my unsuccessful burns were around 4300mb-4500mb. I wonder if this has to do w/ the size of the burn, but I don't want to waste a dvd+r testing this...but i will so you guys have a better idea of what's going on here.
