Plextor PX-708A On Sale @ Dell

Postby CAG on Fri Feb 13, 2004 5:31 pm

Hi. I'm new to the forum.

Dell Small Business is selling the Plextor PX-708A (Black) for 20% off, free shipping, and $50 mfg mail-in rebate. I figured it out and the cost delivered to me (including state sales tax and the rebate) is ~$127. I don't pimp for Dell but I was in the market for one, saw this sale, and thought you guys would want to know.

I'll be back with loads of questions about my new PX-708A...like how to install it, use it, etc.

It is listed for $166.36 at Dell which is 20% off their normal price. With the $50 MIR it is $116.36 plus tax.

I'm really interested, but it says Black in the title.

Does anyone know if Dell has a white/biege bezel version???
A black faced drive will look like crap in my biege case.

Do you have a link to what you just posted? I'd like to bring this little wrinkle (i.e, false advertising) to Dell's attention. That said, even without the rebate, the device is still ~$177 to me incl FL state sales tax.

Thanks

He got it from Plextor's website:
http://www.plextor.com/english/products ... tions.html

I believe Dell should mention the extra product that needs to be bought to qualify for the rebate on the same page as the dvdburner.

Thanks...checked the link...ConvertX looks like something I don't need; besides, it costs as much as the Plextor...The black Plextor that I want is $193 @ futurepowerpc.com...Dell's price, even after adding back in the $50 "rebate", is still the cheapest ($177 vs $193)...I guess it could come down to bundled software...Anybody know what's supposed to come bundled with a retail Plextor?

I'm currently using Nero 6.3.0.3. I've been using Nero for a couple of years since it came with one of the burners I bought. I like it a lot better than EZCD creator. For viewing DVDs I use the ATI dvd player that came with my ATI video card. Powerdvd 5.0 is also good software-dvd player.

Thanks...called Dell sales to see what was bundled...they're "closed" unitl tomorrow morning...I'll call them then....even w/o the software (sounds like I'd be getting different software anyway) seems like a good deal.

Thanks, Ian. What I'd like to know is what software do I need? What I want to do initially (and maybe this is OT) is transfer a bunch of home videos (VSH) to DVD. As I understand it, I'll need software and some other hardware to do this. After that, I'd like to do more with DVD's, etc. Like I said, I'm really a noob at this.

From Dell's site:

The PX-708A is bundled with a variety of powerful software tools including Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator™ 6, PhotoSuite 5 SE™, Roxio DVDMax Player and Dantz Retrospect® backup and restore solution.

At $166.36 (excluding state sales tax), this looks like a pretty good deal. Anyway, I can't find any cheaper anywhere else.

I know this isn't a good of a deal as the Dell one, but Best Buy has the Plextor PX-708A for
$169 after rebate. It's $199 - $30 mail in rebate. = $169.

To me this is a good deal if you want the drive now, don't want to pay shipping, can wait for the rebate to come in, and you can take it back if it's bad. The last reason alone is a good reason. If it comes in damaged you have to ship it back and wait for an new drive. You don't if you buy it at a store near you.

Link to the drive.

Thanks for the link. Dell ships the drive for free...but you're right, being able to get it right away and take it back if you want certainly makes up for the $3 difference in price. I ordered the Dell this morning but there's a BestBuy ~6 miles from my house...hmm

Your welcome.

I didn't know that they offered free shipping. There goes that advantage.
To me the best advantage is those two that you mentioned.

Could you still cancel your order and buy one at Best Buy?

You'll have to see if your Best Buy has any in stock though.

hydrogen:

I ordered it yesterday and Dell just notified me that it's being shipped DHL. Checked the tracking info and its being delivered today! Ordering it one day and getting it the next...not sure if BestBuy is a better deal...seems that Dell's pretty much taken away the get-it right-away advantage.
