So in order to eat vegetables, do I turn my head to the side?
A man has been charged after allegedly punching a 73-year-old woman in the face, breaking her nose and stabbing her in the arm with a corkscrew before hitting a second woman with a bottle at a wedding reception in the Whitsunday Islands.

Saying that PETA has a good cause but its methods of achieving it are deplorable is like saying that Communism was a nice thought but the methods were deplorable. Probably because a lot of people don't think about the true goals of either. (communism not just being about sharing everything, but suppressing talent in the face of equality...enough polisci, on to the real post, if you want more of this debate, read some Ayn Rand).

PETA has never been about just preventing cruelty to animals. PETA believes fervently that rats, dogs, chinchillas, every animal on this earth should have the exact same rights as a human being. Nevermind that they cannot explain why an eagle killing a fish for food isn't wrong, but one of us killing a cow for a beefsteak is. In their mind, eating any animal is cruel, taking eggs from chickens and milk from cows is stealing, and that every farm that raises animals for human consumption is the equivalent of a Nazi death camp (and I'm not kidding, Ingrid Newkirk, their president, has likened poultry farms to a modern-day Holocaust).

If you want to prevent cruelty, support the ASPCA. Walk away from PETA as fast as you can, and stay away.

no it's not.

LoneWolf wrote:communism not just being about sharing everything, but suppressing talent in the face of equality

no it's not.

well, that must be the definitive source of information on communism, politics, philosophy and morality in general.

note: i'm not making any statements about PETA. i'm not familiar with what they stand for and what they do.

LoneWolf wrote:taking eggs from chickens and milk from cows is stealing

now that is really stupid.
take a milking cow and don't milk it - now that's cruelty!!!

i've just lost any possible sympathy i might possibly have had for PETA (seeing as i am against cruely towards animals).

dodec, I won't go so far as to end up thread-hijacking, but you and I will agree to disagree on this one. Note that I said "communism" not "socialism". Also note that there are a lot of things Ayn Rand has written that I completely disagree with; I just happen to agree with her on why she believes Communism is wrong, which stems from her actual life's experiences, as written in the novel "We the Living". I would have liked to use a less in-depth metaphor, but couldn't readily think of one at the time.

As for the above PETA stuff that I mentioned, all of this is a matter of public record, and actual fact, not interpreted. Most people think they are against animal cruelty, which sounds great. If they knew that PETA was about animal equality, it might change their minds. It's interesting that PETA actually held a campaign on college campuses attempting to persuade students to "Drink Beer, Not Milk" and handing out bottle openers (they got in a fair amount of hot water with that one, due to promoting underage drinking), even going so far as to argue that beer is better for you than milk (though some of you might agree, just ask the medical community what they think of that one).

no problem, LoneWolf.

i also must admit that i've only read Rand's "The Fountainhead" and found it to be rather condescending and oversimplistic, too much of an overt preaching. i do not know of her other works.

like i said, while personally i'm against curelty to animals, i didn't make any judgements on PETA since i don't know exactly what they are and what they stand for. i just made a few comments about (some of) your words that seemed a little blatant for my taste. and as you saw some of my darts were aimed at PETA too (which can also be seen in my previous post from over 2 months ago).

(hope i didn't offend you, no such intention, just a friendly exchange of opinions).

No offense taken. And I did notice what you said about PETA, and didn't take it as negative, I only set out to expand upon what I'd already said.

As for "The Fountainhead", I enjoyed the read, but I disagree with Rand's philosophy of "Objectivism"(?) in its entirety. "We The Living" was her first novel, based on her own experiences growing up in Soviet Russia during the fall of the czars leading to the rise of Marxism/Lenninism, and she pays much more attention to the story than to pitching her own ideals.

I found this on Airliners.Net, thought I'd post it here:

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals was planning to use Ronald Reagan’s picture in a campaign promoting vegetarianism as a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, shown below to be fair:

ImageImage

Nancy Reagan was NOT pleased, and sent off a cease and desist letter, advising them to stop using the President's photo.

Did PETA respect that? HELL NO!

“We were hoping to get Nancy Reagan’s endorsement, but the truth is — because he was a public figure and because we’re not looking to sell a product or make money off his image — we don’t need her permission,” a PETA insider said.

So on PETA's website, they've included this poll, saying they'll defer to public opinion:

Please let us know whether or not you think that PETA should run this respectful, prevention-oriented billboard.

Yes—People deserve to know that Alzheimer’s is preventable. “Win One for the Gipper” is respectful and could help save lives.

No—PETA should not use this billboard to warn people about the dangers of eating meat.

Doesn't it look like they've creatively spun the verbiage on the "no" option to sound so negative that people who are on the fence will stay away from it? They make it sound like if you select "no," that you're somehow in favor of endangering people!

Here are the links to the news story as well as the PETA poll:

I don't think it matters. I think the only people that actually care what PETA says these days are people that already agree with PETA.

Interesting thing Aviationwiz, is that PETA doesn't post the results of the poll either. So we'll never know what the court of public opinion really says, unless they choose to post it, and be objective in doing so.

I'd guess they've probably e-mailed every one of their members about the poll in order to skew the results...I certainly wouldn't put it past them.
