Missing external CD-RW in XP

Postby avangion on Mon Jun 28, 2004 3:32 am

Hi. I'm on Win XP Pro and my BenQ external USB1 CD-RW (model 6406EU) does not show up in "My Computer" after I rebooted due to system hang during CD-burning. I found some information but it didn't help much. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_c.htm

Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers > USB optical storage device
There is a yellow mark (!) here. And I uninstalled and reloaded the driver. Under properties, it says, "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". Reloading the driver does not help (even in safe mode) and there is no new driver.

Registry Entry
Under HK_L_M\system\currentcontrolset\control\class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}, no upper or lower filters existed.

Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\, there are no Cdr4_2K, Cdralw2k and Cdudf. There is UdfReadr, which I backed up and deleted. There are others like cd20xrnt, cdaudio, cdfs and cdrom.

I'm at a loss as to what else to do. Pls help!

I'm not too familiar with ASPI. I've looked at http://www.nu2.nu/aspi/. Well, I have wnaspi32.dll in my windows\system32 folder. Running aspi_you.exe (see above link), it returns only with disk (probably HDD) and CD-ROM (not the external CD-RW, but my internal CD-ROM drive).

By the way, my CD-RW is using USB 1.1. Pls advise. Thanks.

ASPI cannot access external devices. SPTI is needed for this, and to access SPTI you must be an administrator.

Have you looked at the benQ website? They offer a USB 1.0 for Win98/2K/XP driver http://www.benq.com/drivers/storage_drivers.html
