DVD backup - taking very long

I have a LG-4082B with A206 firmware..
I am trying to backup a DVD using DVD Shrink. But it takes me around 2 hrs to read/transcode the DVD and another 1/2 hr to burn it. The media is memorex 4x.
OS: Win2000 pro with latest service pack
P3-800 with 256M RAM

I also tried CloneDVD and its taking about the same time.
After reading the forums, I enabled DMA which reduced the time from original 3hrs to 2hrs. But even 2 hrs is too much.

Any suggestions?

You are transcoding on Pentium III 800Mhz with 256MB RAM and also depending on hard drive speed, it may actually either slow down or speed up a little.

Buy a faster CPU and DVD-ROM drive,you might be able to use a 1.2Ghz PIII($70) on your motherboard.

How large is the DVD image you're processing? 6gb or 7gb probably.

Is the whole DVD needed or just the main movie?

I use DVD2ONE to copy just the movie (without menus etc).

Nero Recode can also do this with menus etc intact if you wish, but it's a quality trade off. Lower the bitrate for menus and raise it for the main movie, or lower the bitrate overall.

Time...

As long as he's willing to accept it WILL take longer with an older CPU, there is no need to upgrade. If the system meets their needs for everything else they're doing, they can probably stand the wait.

It all depends on what it is he/she is trying to do. Which I gather is a DVD9 -> DVD5 transcode. Which is seldom a good thing, quality wise.

Set it up and let it run overnight, and time won't matter while you're sleeping. And you can save $1000 by not upgrading for now.

I'm still using a P3 1ghz and can transcode is under 5 hours while I'm sleeping. Or I can use DVD2ONE (or Nero Recode) and just strip the main movie file(s) in about an hour. The wife & I can't afford to spend $1000 to upgrade. The computer works fine for every other task we put to it.

I guess the question than is: on a P3-800 system for 256 RAM, is 2 hrs the best time I can get for transcoding a complete DVD? Or is there some settings in the hardware/software that can reduce this time.

Once again: are you transcoding a 7gb DVD down to fit on a single DVD?

2 hours would be damn good if that's the case.

If you're just extracting the main movie without menu or special features, then 2 hours would be about right (perhaps a bit long).
