No, they're both manual. You press the eject button on the front panel which releases the hook and the panel drops down. Some reviewers state the its better if you use your finger to gentle lower the front panel. Once the panel is fully down then the DVD tray slides out. In the reviews, I find it abit confusing when they explain how it closes. I believe you push the DVD tray abit so it slides in, then you lift the front panel up so that it locks closed. The remote control is suppose to have an eject button but again I found the description in the review abit confusing as to how that worked. Perhaps by pressing the remote's eject button, it automates the front panel unlock/flip down/tray open but in closing all it does is slide the DVD tray closed and you still have to manually close the front panel.

I thought about re-readiing the reviews and perhaps e-mailing the reviewers and asking them about this. I have only found four reviews (I haven't checked to see if there has been any new ones yet):

I do quite of bit of reading on computer sites every day to stay current with what's available and what's coming out. I've been keeping an eye on both the G0-M1600A and the VPC1000 for any new info but I haven't heard of anything since the CeBIT 2004 show in July. Occasionally I'll do a google search to see if any site has any new info.

Do to other things, I've gotten behind on building my new PC - I'm behind schedule of about 3 months, so it looks like about August to October 2004 I'll be building it. I'll get the VPC1000 about September/October.

I came across a new review of the VPC 1000B:

In the review/discussion it mentions that the Gigabyte G0-M1600A/B is an OEM of the Asour VPC 1000B - which explains why they are nearly identical. I still think the VPC 1000B has a better looking VFD display.

Note: This is the first time that they now offer a "B" version (like the GO-M1600A switched to GO-M1600B) - the eject button is different, the metal trim of the VFD panel display and the shape and some lettering of the black VFD display is different. I don't what other changes are there besides the cosmetic. The new look is much better then the original "A" version.

Toshiba with a special firmware is just as fast or even faster in some cases than Lite-On. Besides, it's much more quiet and better made. If you decide not to flash it with No Limit Firmware, Toshiba is noiseless at DVD movies playback.

I assume you've tried a Lite-On then? Mind telling me what Lite-On and what Toshiba you're talking about? And what exactly do you mean it's better made?

Also are you comparing the noise level at the same speed? Clearly, if you limit the speed of a drive to a certain level, it's going to be less noisy so it's not really relevant to compare 16 LiteOn to 4x Toshiba (or whatever the limit is).

Do you mean 48x CD read speed? Because no drive can read 48x with DVD.

Why exactly do you care about the quality of the optical lens? To my knowledge, no one ever bothers to look into this because no once cares. For the end user, issues that are more important are read speeds, error correction ability (how well it reads scratched and poor quality discs), reliability etc. These are all affected by the quality of the optical lens of course but also by many other factors and it is quite difficult to analyse the quality of the optical lens which as said seems pointless anyway.

Also, is there any reason you limit yourself to Pioneer, Liteon, Toshiba and Plextor? In fact, I have never heard of people talk about the quality of Pioneer DVD-roms and do Plextor even make DVD-roms anymore? LiteOn and Toshiba do make good DVD readers (DVD-roms) but Aopen do as well (said to be the best by some) and this was not even in your list.

I would recommend Aopen, specifically 1648/AAP or AAP Pro (haven't decided yet which one is better). I would say the LiteOn and the Toshiba would be my second choice but I have not done enough research to know which brand and which model number to recommend of each.

However, it's still not clear to me what your needs are. In my case, I primarily want a drive that has very good ec and reads burnt DVD media at a good speed. The Aopen appears to meet or exceed my requirements here (it appears to be the best one for my requirements here. It is also said to have one of (if not the) best ripping speeds for DVD-video but I haven't really looked into this in depth. However, the Aopen is said to be not good enough for media quality scanning.

I would also recommend the Aopen, specifically 1648/AAP drive. I did head to head tests against my liteon 166s and found it to be significantly faster when ripping DVDs. Sometimes 2 or 3 minutes faster. I really like this drive!!!
