Out of these dvd rws, which would you get?

Postby Agent_J on Mon Aug 09, 2004 5:00 pm

BenQ DW822A
LG GSA-4082B
LG GSA-4120B
LiteOn SOHW-1213S
LiteOn SOHW-812S
NEC ND-2500A
NEC ND-2510A
Pioneer DVR-107
Pioneer DVR-A07
Pioneer DVR-A07XLA
Toshiba SDR5272

So which dvd rw should I get from this list :)? I would need the following requirements:
-it will be my only dvd drive, so it has to be a good reader.
-it needs to burn well with cheap dvd +/- media
-bitsetting capability
-dual layer would also be nice

By those requirements I'd get an ND-2510A and flash to Herrie's beta5 firmware with bitsetting and media hacks.

I've heard NEC's had problems reading though, do you know if that's true?

Based off of your requirements, we can do the following:

BenQ DW822A - official dual layer potential support, official bitsetting, fairly forgiving writer.
LG GSA-4082B - No Dual Layer, No Bitsetting
LG GSA-4120B - Requires hacked firmware for partial bitsetting (DVD+R9 Only!)
LiteOn SOHW-1213S - No Dual Layer (potenially possible to overclock to LiteON 1633S which DOES have dual layer)
LiteOn SOHW-812S - No Dual Layer (potenially possible to overclock to LiteON 832S which DOES have dual layer)
NEC ND-2500A - No Dual layer without hack, and even then it's touch and go....
NEC ND-2510A - No official bitsetting support...
Pioneer DVR-107 - No Dual layer / bitsetting
Pioneer DVR-A07 - No Dual layer / bitsetting
Pioneer DVR-A07XLA - No dual layer / bitsetting
Toshiba SDR5272 - No bitsetting, don't think it does dual layer either
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

The NEC burners do have some issues with error-correction, but problems are usually seen only with rip-speed patched firmware. Given a decent quality disc to read, you shouldn't have any trouble. The NEC is such an outstanding value, it's not hard to overlook some reading issues with crappy discs.

well personally, I'd agree with rdgrimes on this one... but for the needs you spelled out, the BenQ is probably best... although you might want to go for the BenQ 830a instead of the 822a, since it comes with dual layer support, and the 822a is still waiting on the upgrade from BenQ. Just my opinion

You seem to be posting samething (this and other thread) on CDFreaks. Just get one of these drives most people have. Nec 25xx or LiteOn 8x2. You'll never get a drive that fits your needs since new faster drives with more/less functions you want will keep coming as times goes.

@dolphinius_rex

What do you mean by "hacked" firmware for "partial" bitsetting? There are TDB hacked firmware files at rpc1.org but the only difference is about rpc1, not bitsetting.

LG HL-DT-ST GSA-4120B
Auto Reset and RPC1 Firmware - N0AD Windows (RPC1 and Auto-Reset), and A101 Windows (RPC1 and Auto-Reset), and A102 Windows (RPC1 and Auto-Reset).

N0AD is not hacked by anyone outside LG, but just leaked by someone outside LG. :D

cdrinfo gave benQ DW800A a very good reader score along with about everything else. As I remember the NEC has had a mix review when it comes to a reader, some saying it doesn't always read even the disks it burns.

BenQ 1620 should be out in a week or two.

There are too many sites that have "cdrinfo" in the url addresses so it'd be better to say cdrinfo.pl or cdrinfo.net or cdrinfo.co.kr or cdrinfo.com. The co.kr site is very good to download some things at nearly 100Mbps and they sell media and drives though not directly.
