LG GSA-4120R?

Postby Seed on Sat Jul 31, 2004 8:54 am

I'm about to order this DVD writer, but all local stores have the "R" and not the "B" version. Is it the same drive, but just retail and not "bulk"? Do new firmware revisions apply to both and can be used on both? I can't find any info about this model on LG's site.

Also, is there still the possibility of using MTKFlash or a similar utility to backup this drive's firmware like I used to do with LG's 40x and 52x CD-RW drives? I'm a little weary of using their flasher utility, and although I've used it successfully on several drives, I've also heard horror stories from at least 2 others.

Can you post about the price? Is it the same price as 4120B or cheaper?

I guess it's the DVD+R/+RW version of GSA-4120B. The only difference may be that it cannot write to DVD-R/-RW.

Does anyone know what GSA-4120R is?

I got some Google search results.

http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:Ej7m ... 120R&hl=en

DVD+-Brenner LG GSA-4120R Retail 12x+R/4x+RW/8x-R/4x-RW/5xDVD-RAM/16xDVD-ROM
40xCD-R/ 24xCD-RW/ 40xCD-ROM (Preis inkl. Aktionsrabatt. Gutscheincode 04X06E4G im Bestellform. eingeb.)

That looks exactly like GSA-4120B.

this web-auction site sells a 4120R.
in the specs, in the first paragraph it does mention DVD-RAM, in the 2nd and 3rd it doesn't :o

http://www.netaction.co.il/multi.phtml?item=1858104

the link to the manufacturer's website links to the 4120B page.

i had thought (before reading this topic) that it's a typo...now, who knows ??

I also think it is a typo. I don't know what sites Seed looked at.

The price is a little higher, and it clearly says +RW and also -RW and DVD-RAM. The description says "box". I can't access that site now, but I'm convinced the features are similar to those of the 4120B. What I don't know is where to find support for this model.

Is the "R" just the code for the retail boxed version and the B is the OEM?

(oops, you already asked that)

Ok, that said, I would be 99% sure that's just retail vs. bulk. NewEgg has OEM listed as "BB" and retail as just "B". That said, I seriously doubt there are 2 incompatible revisions of a brand new drive at this point. It's probably the same drive...

from LG's website:
http://us.lge.com/Product/proddetail.do ... yId=020206
Product specs page at the bottom:
UPC#
GSA-4120BI: 048231292627 (Retail-Ivory)
GSA-4120BR: 048231292641 (Retail-Black)
GSA-4120BB: 048231292634 (Bare-Ivory)
GSA-4120BK: 048231292658 (Bare-Black)

(this sort of coding is typical of LG).

possibly they meant the 4120BR

Poor people. They sell drives without making sure they are all GSA-4120B.

@Justin42

There are right now millions of GSA-4120B and GSA-4082B retail drives right now.

LG and Samsung only ship the "bulk" drives for the PC makers and resellers to handle them with lower cost. Ten drives in each box instead of one drive in each box is a lot of sensible when you are ordering 1,000 drives or 100,000 drives at once.

OK, I have the drive and it's the B model. It was just a typo.

It has firmware A100 and I'd like to know which of the unofficial firmware versions I should try. Is there one you'd recommend?
