I can't help noticing it says "write performance" and not "writing quality"

If it can burn Optodisc 4x DVD-Rs (@4x) without failing mid burn... I'll be *VERY* impressed. I will also change my signiture to "I Love Plextor" for one whole week!

Well, when I get home in 3 hours or so, I'll try burning another disc on the PX-712a. If it works, I'm sure you'll hear the scream of surprise even in the U.S.! (people in Europe might have to wait for the radio broadcast though  )

Yeah, this firmware looks like a winner so far.

I got the 1.05 firmware but only have some Taiyo Yuden media to test with. I did a write test and the FE-TE tests with 1.04 then with 1.05. I know the effort is with bad media but this was all I could do.

These tests were almost the same except the FE-TE test with 1.05 started differently The units are what they seem to be on the graph. There are 4 lines below the 40 so they must be 8 units apiece.

The FE started about 24 units high and over the first 200 megs of disk it settled down to 8 and continued that way slowly increasing to the end of the disk where the test ended with 16.

The TE started about 32 units high. Over the first 200 megs of disk it settled down to 24 and continued that way slowly increasing to the end of the disk where the test ended with 32.

Sorry for no graphs but I haven't figured out how to include the jpgs I made with screen prints.

Well, it looks like I won't be adding "I love Plextor" to my signiture any time soon.... too bad too! I *almost* expected it to work :-?

As with 1.04, it still fails right at the leadout. I'll test other media on it when I get the chance, but at the moment I'm working on something else for a friend, which is eating up all my testing time. I'll post more details on that when I'm allowed to

Yeah, out of the media I've tested so far, the only one that isn't better is Optodisc 8x DVD+R. ](*,)

Hrm... I've tested something from Optodisc that improved, but it wasn't that much of an improvement... well, it went from utterly useless to "very poor but usable".... The media is unreleased and unannounced, so i'm not allowed to say what it is, sorry! (heck, I'm not even supposed to HAVE it  )

I'm told that this firmware is not 100% of the improvements we have been expecting... there may yet be a 1.06 with a few more changes. Nothing solid mind you, but this is what has been suggested.

I have tried the following verbatim media:
http://www.mediamatch.de/detaildvd.php?ID=2120
( Verbatim x4 rated DVD+R Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation MCC 0028 )
on a Plextor 712A 1.05 (RPC1 by Dangerous brothers) with x4, x6, x8 and attached the results
strangely enough the less PIE error i had the more POE errors. what does it mean? which of the three is concidered a "better burn"?

Verbatim x4 MCC 0028 @ x6

Verbatim x4 MCC 0028 @ x8

and another wired thing is that running the SUM8 test on the x8 burn again produced this:

I never use the burst test personally. I think the 6x burn looks the best to me... but let's hear a few more opinions.

I would agree with Dolphin that the 6X speed looks the best based on the information provided above.

6x looks best, but there is nothing wrong with that 8x scan.

Something to consider is that the difference between the 4x and 6x scans might just be the difference between one burn and another, they may actually be about the same quality when more tests are done. Then again, burning at 6x on that drive with that media might actually be a little better then burning at 4x. Hard to tell from just one test, but I wouldn't worry about it, since the results were quite good in all three tests anyways!

What’s with the POE spikes? Why do I have more on the slower burns? Does this make any sense to anyone? I admit the burns are perfectly readable; it takes around 8 minutes to copy them back to the hard drive.
I agree that the x4 and the x6 are practically the same as I ran the sum8 test on the x8 again and it came out different (results attached in my original post), with PIE <20, so I suppose its somewhat within standard deviation of the test.

Any chance I can expect similar results (at least on the x6 burn) on the MCC001? http://www.mediamatch.de/detaildvd.php?ID=1785

I can get them really cheep :)

BTW, this time it took my less than 2 hours. For the LG drive, i needed a day to just get the command out of the Nero logs :=)
