Only 40x CD reading and writing speeds? I was kinda hoping LG would do more than just add 16x DVD+R writing speeds to the 4120B.

it's almost certainly based on the same hardware specs as the 4120B... what a lame-o drive! still only 2.4x DVD+R9 too! :o

Ya it's kind of disappointing if these are the true specs. I was holding off on buying a burner until LG had a -/+ 16x and DL 4x before I bought a faster drive to replace my Lg 4040b 4x drive.

I guess we will just have to wait and see.

On a positive note, if these specs are correct, then since this drive is really just a 4120 with 16x +R support, perhaps someone can hack the firmware so it is able to be used to upgrade a 4120. :)

I think any drive now is just going to be a "filler" drive...who needs 16x anyway...and with the rebates going on for the 4120b it is a better buy. What do I mean by a filler drive? Well, something to make $$ until -R dual layer comes out..plain and simple....this is not just with LG but with anyone as well...maybe tweak the dual layer writing times...but nothing earth shattering...-r will be the next big thing.

disappointing but perhaps a good news for 4120 owners....looks like lg is using same hardware & you know what that means

It means you have to shell out more money for 16x writing speeds? LG's drives are very hard to hack. Otherwise we'd all be buying 4040B's and writing at 8x.

so far the closest anyone has come to hacking an LG DVD burner is probably Alexnow with his bitsetting utiltity, but I'm not sure that can really be called a "hack" per se.

The OEM version is available in Japan:

I have a feeling it will be a good month or so before we see the retail boxed version.

personally, I'm not too excited about this drive. If this is all LG can do to bring out a competitive drive, I'm a little dissapointed. I only hope that they bring out a new drive for the 16x16 version later on, and not just another tweak of the 4120B

You must really want a drive with DVD-R DL. To put it simply, we don't know. Watch the news. You'll find out when the rest of us do.

The GSA-4160B should start shipping in the US very soon. LG USA just got theirs in earlier this week.

Instead of disabling the drive's region counter, the firmware is modified to look to the volatile RAM for the region settings, so each time the drive loses power, the number of allowed changes are reset. For the GSA-4XXXB drives, the counter is reset to whatever it was when the drive was flashed, most other autoreset firmwares just reset to 5 changes allowed each time.
