Taiyo Yuden's sold as??

Postby grouch on Fri Sep 10, 2004 7:42 pm

Since I don't really trust Ritek's quality control anymore, I started to look for another manufacturer for DVD-R's.
I tried looking for Taiyo Yuden's, but somehow it doesn't seem as they're being sold under the name Taiyo Yuden's. What do they sell as?? I have access to stores in Toronto, so if anyone knows where I can get and the brand they sell as, then let me know.
I have a LG 4082, so if anyone knows of other media that works well with my drive, feel free to list it.
Thanks.

If you find any Fujifilm media (4x or 8x, +R or -R) that says "Made in Japan" on the package, those are Taiyo Yuden. Also Sony and Pioneer 4x -Rs that are Made in Japan are TY media. Sometimes Maxell 4x -R Made in Japan is TY, otherwise it's Maxell's own media (just as good). Pretty much any DVD media you find that is made in Japan will be TY.

Most likely the BenQ discs are SONY04D1, made in Taiwan (not sure who makes them for Sony). Not sure about the other discs you mentioned.

The BenQ DVD-R discs are indeed made with a Sony code, by Daxon in Malaysia for the most part. Quality is so-so, and very dependant on your drive.

Malaysia you say? Most of what I've read about the Sony code discs is that they're made in Taiwan mostly, but can also be from Japan (!) and Austria :o , as was the case with the 5 pack of colored Sony DVD-Rs I saw at a local Wal-Mart.

Sony brand media is usually made in Taiwan or Austria. RARELY do we see Sony media made in Japan, since it mostly stays in Japan :P

Sony code media is officially licensed to Sony Austria, Sony Japan, Lead Data Taiwan, Daxon Taiwan, and Daxon Malaysia.

The BenQ brand media sold at Futureshop is mostly made in Malaysia by Daxon, some of it might be made in Taiwan as well, most likely made by Daxon as well.

Dolph, Sony Made In Japan - TY? I'm getting a VERY nice deal on some Sony +R 8X discs, from an authorised distro here.

Umm, it's POSSIBLE... but it's been a while since I've heard of Sony media being made by Taiyo Yuden. I'd think it'd be Sony made by Sony.

Do you know for certain it's made in Japan?

Yep, pretty sure. So Sony make their own discs in Japan as well?

Futureshop BenQ 4x DVD+R

Postby grouch on Sat Oct 16, 2004 4:18 pm

Ok, just bought these BenQ DVD+R 50pk spindle for 24.99+tax cuz up here in thunder bay there's no place else for Ritek or Taiyo's.
And Futureshop was sold out of the DVD-R's, so I had to settle with buying DVD+R's for now.
The spindle label has: Made in Malaysia UPC Code: 8 07284 20178 5

From Nero CD-DVD Speed Info:
Manufacturer : Daxon
Code : DAXON AZ1
Disc Type : DVD+R
Usage : General
Recording Speed : 2.4 X - 4 X (with this recorder LG 4082)
Capacity : 4.38 GB 4700375040 Bytes

If any wants more info with another info proggy, let me know.
I only use Nero CD-DVD Speed because that's all I know of.

www.blankmedia.ca and www.ncix.com both have Taiyo Yuden 8x DVDRs for about $1/disc. I can personally vouch for both companies, and also for the authenticity of their Taiyo Yuden DVDR media :)
