what's the worst DVD burner u have owned?

DVD-R/W, DVD+R/RW, DVD-RAM

I have been quite happy with both my drives:

My optorite 0201 .... despite the many problems people have with this drive, I have found it to write most disks I threw at it rather well. I used to have problems with it coastering 1 out of 5 disks, but those problems seem to have disappeared with cooler weather and the latest firmware. (not sure which one is responsible for the improvement) My main gripe with it now is that it is slow reading DVD+/-R's and it can sometimes lock itself up, requiring a reboot.

My new pioneer 108 ... very nice burns and a much better reader then any other DVD drive I have owned. With the pioneer being such a new drive, its performance can only improve as time progresses.

All I have to do is look to my Toshiba Satellite for that one...The Matsushita UJ-810. First...it's a DVD-R 1X / DVD RAM 2X Drive. It is so finicky reading disks...that oftentimes, you have to load a disk three to four times before it reads it. It is slow as molasses and I will only use it for archiving data for my laptop...

As far as the Plextor PX-708A...I got one the day they came out and have had 0 problems with it. I flashed all the firmwares except 1.06, which stunk to high heaven. The latest 1.07 firmware is fine. Always burns at 8X no matter what I throw at it. In the past...I have always had problems with Memorex media and Plextor...not with this drive.

Added the NEC ND-3500A just recently...great drive.

Update: Just for the hell of it I reflashed my "junk" Lite-On 411S to a 811S using the Zebra Mod from Speedlabs.

With the latest (and patched) 811S firmware I was able to burn a Verbatim 4X at 8X and a Memorex 4X DVD-R with no problems. Both played perfectly in my cheap Mintek DVD player. Memorex's always gave this drive problems before.

Looks like I wont be using this drive as a doorstop after all. :D Nice hack!

ok, i tested another drive that totally sucked

i bought the BTC DRW1008IM 8x DVD±RW and tested it out for a week and man i thought that no drive could be worse than than my old burner LITEON 811S but the BTC DRW1008IM is much worse.
first of all, i could not burn (some) 8x certified at 8x and could not burn any 4x certified at 8x but when i patched the firmware from codeguys, then i was able to burn 4x certified at 8x but that was a mistake. they did not work on any of my home dvd players and the skipped through most of the movie on my portable dvd player.

i use some junk and some good media blanks and i know it mostly depends on the quality of the blanks but i could throw any piece of crap blank in my BENQ 800A AND NEC 2500 and they will burn them w/ 100% satisfaction
NEC 2500A $20 10/04
NEC 3500AG for $47 4/05
NEC 3540 for $35 9/05
BENQ 1620 for $36 9//05
