problem burning vcd/audio cd with lg cdrw

Postby gzeltser on Tue Sep 14, 2004 2:49 pm

hello.

i have the lg gce8400b (40*12*40) and the problem is that its doing problems with vcd's and audio cd's. when i burn vcd, it comes out with a lot digital noise and its stuck from time to time. faster burning speed causing more digital noise. the problem with audio is the same just that the cd's sounds with a lot of scratching noise. i updated to last firmware, tried different kind of cd but no good. i also e-mailed lg and told them about the problem but they didnt answer.

i want to add that at work i have the lg gce5232 (52*32*52) but the same problem with vcd.

does anyone know something about this problem ?
is it only my bad luck or there are more people with this problem ?

thanks for the help,
gil.

what kind of media are you using?

what software are you using?

did you try burning at a lower speed?

I tried several types of media like TDK, Nashua, Platinum & Verbatim color but got the same results.
The software i use is Nero 6, but I did try to burn with Alcohol 120 & Easy cd creator.
As for the burning speed the lowest in this drive is x8 and when i burn at that speed the noise is less then in higher speeds. I always burn at x8 because of this problem but it isn't help.

Do you have DMA enabled on all drives?

Yes, dma is enable although I dont think this drive support it.
This is the review from the site:
"Lows:
Media requirements are a little higher than some other 40x writers.
Limited number of recording speeds.
Does not support UDMA 33.
The drive created a lot of errors when extracting audio from scratched and dirty CD's. "

mybee it is just a bad drive ?

if it doesn't support UDMA33, it probably does support Multi-Word DMA mode 2. next best thing, same transfer rate too if i recall correctly. definitely better than PIO mode 4.

what does windows show when you try to enable DMA?

since you say you have the same problems with another drive at work , it seems to me likely that the probelm is elsewhere.

maybe your source data is not good?

NO....your drive can support 1X & 2X if you want to, Nero doesn't have this option but burnatonce have it!
modern drives actually support 1X recording, many of us just don't aware of it

Maybe your drive laser is dying?
If its a aged laser, use long strategy disc will help
as long strategy discs are more tolerable with laser power
slightly innaccurate laser power will also produce a OK burn
those Cyanine and Azo
You said you used Verbatim
Is it Verbatim or Verbatim DataLifePlus
Verbatim DataLifePlus are long strategy (Azo) disc

You only have problems when burning VCD/CD right?
VCD/CD do not have additional error correction on them, a bad burn with C2 will cause noise etc etc
DataCD is different, if you have C2 , you can still get back the data as it has filesystem correction
that's why you can burn 800MB data to VCD/Cd but only 700MB for DataCD! the 100MB is reserved for correction

Thank you all for trying to help, dodecahedron - you are right about the DMA, the drive support Multi-Word DMA mode 2 & win xp tell you that. I tried different sources audio and vcd but the output was the same.
as I'm trying to find info about this problem I found out that I am not alone with this problem. I saw in forums the many poeple share this problem with lg drives and some drive where replaced by lg. My drive is out of warrenty so it cant be replaced.
kotrtim - I don't know the software burnatonce but I will try. In the drive spec lg say that the minimum speed is x8 - but I'll try (nothing to lose).
As for the drive, I dont think that the drive laser is dying because I didn't used it that much. even that the drive is 1 year old I started to use it reacently to burn stuff for my little kid.
I think I'll replace it with a liteon.

welcome :)

i would have thought your problems are media problems, but you said you used various media...
i also thought it might be software problems, but you said you used various programs...(although how you used Alcohol for music/VCD?)

you said you had same problems with another LG at work... :o

now you say you also used other source files and still the same problem...weird.

you say you read in other forums other people having these problems with LG drives. what other forums?

if you're thinking of a LiteOn drive, well the current model is the LiteOn SOHR 5238S (if i got it right).
i can recommend this store: Lamir ( www.lamir.co.il )
they're selling it for 185 shekels + 39 shekels shipping. or you can pick it up from the store and save the shipping, they'e located in Herzliyya.
(bought 2 such drives from them recently)
they're very cheap, last time i compared this was the cheapest i could find this drive here in Israel. and their service is OK from my little experience. (PM me if you want more info).
