Dual layer technology question...

Postby wbcs_hardware on Thu Jul 22, 2004 7:00 pm

Can anyone tell me when dual layer technology was implemented and made available for sale in retail DVD-RW units?

Double Layer DVD+R came out a month or two ago. No idea when double layer DVD-R will be available though. Probably Xmas time.

DVD-R for Xmas, maybe, but for DVD-RW or DVD+RW it's only a dream at the moment...

actually, slightly more then a dream.... there is some minor R&D going on to see if it is a potentially viable product to produce. So there is some possability.
Punch Cards -> Paper Tape -> Tape Drive -> 8" Floppy Diskette -> 5 1/4" Floppy Diskette -> 3 1/2" "Flippy" Diskette -> CD-R -> DVD±R -> BD-R

I have further questions:
1- Just to be clear - there will not be an RW version of DL ? ever?
2- Is the DL writing speed expect to rise - right now most burners do x4, and Toshiba has a model thet does x5. Is this expected to rise to x16 anytime?

The reason for these questions is that I'm considering getting a x16 DL drive, but was wondering if a significant speed and compatibilty improvement is expected in the near future ?

Thanks

The more you wait, the better you get. But when you wait, you don't burn...

DL 4X and 5X are just out and will stay for 2/3 months to my mind, because 4X DL media are not here (new DL burners use 2.4X DL disc @ 4X)...

The incoming evolutions are DVD+RW (SL) @ 8X and DVD-R DL support
in Plextor 716 and Pioneer x09.
