Ritek G05 8X -R: how are they? How much more are TY worth...

Postby VEFF on Tue Sep 28, 2004 8:46 am

I have a $100 Best Buy gift card (and awaiting a $50 Amex BestBuy reward) which I was thinking of using toward a PX716A.

Then again, I know I'll probably be able to get a better deal for the burner online, which is where I bought my DRU-500A and one of my
PX-708As for well under retail after coupons and discounts.

Best Buy has 50 packs of TY 8X DVD+R for $29.99 - $5 MIR. Nice deal for TY!
I was considering buying two or three with the gift card.
However, meritline has 100 packs of 8X RiData DVD-R (Media ID: Ritek G05) for only $36 + shipping after $10 MIR.

The G05s didn't get very good reviews at videohelp.com, but I wanted to see what some of the folks here thought about them.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I have the NEC 3500a and bought a 100 pack of the Ritek G05 a few weeks ago. So far, 20 discs burned with no problems. Ran all discs through Nero checks and they all came back with zero errors.

With that said, the price at Best Buy for Ty discs is very good. Are they available online or only in stores? Are you sure they are Ty? If so, I would still buy those over the Ritek even though I have had no issues with them.

If you are planning on buying a 16x burner in the future, then buying TY 8x media is a good way of likely getting 16x burns on that drive. RITEKG05 media is not likely to be overclocked that fast.

Thanks guys.
Yes, I am planning on getting a 16X drive, so I'll consider passing on the G05s, unless I can verify that they can be burned at 16X.
I am likely to get the PX716A.

They are Fuji (marked made in Japan). They are available online and in store.
My store had tons of them left yesterday afternoon (I am on vacation).
Then again, they aren't open on Sundays and maybe people went after work or school yesterday...

I checked the reviews at videohelp.com again.
The RiData (Ritek G05) got mixed reviews, depending on burner used, firmware version and DVD player used for placback.
Someone with a PX712A did say that with fw 1.05 they burned fine, but not with earlier firmwares.

I couldn't find any Fuji discs on Bestbuy's website that were 8X. I saw the 2.4X 50 pack DVD+R and the 1X DVD-R but that is it. I know the Best Buy around my area only carries Taiwan made Fuji's (was there 2 days ago).

Some of the Fuji R+ are made in Japan and some of them are made
in Taiwan. I saw both of them in BB last weekend. They are sold with
the same UPC code and same price. You need to pick ones "made in
Japan" in store. These R+'s were made by TY.

Anyone know which of the two would be better in an NEC 3500?

There are more than one manufacturer for that SKU then. I got the +R at an Alexandria, VA store, and they come out as Ritek, R02

i would say they r not bad media, but many drives do not allow overspeeding on them. some burn results:
1. tdk 1616 f/w 2.C8

2. Liteon 1633s ( BS0C)

Thanks for the feedback and scans raygay27.

I haven't ordered my 16X burner yet, so I'll wait, especially now that 16X media is starting to appear, which will hopefully lower 8X media prices even more.
