SATA DRIVES??

Postby DReborn on Thu Oct 21, 2004 11:59 am

Hey everybody...I want to be in the new market for a new dvd burner and I know that plextor has the 12x SATA burner out but it's tough to buy when all these fun 16x burners are coming out. Any idea when more 16x+ SATA dvd burners are coming out?

PS: I know there isn't a performance increase...it's more the cable management (I know, sad.).

The PX-716SA should be out in a month or two.

That's fun...has plextor gotten better with media compatibility? I have had the pioneer a06 which I love.

Any other brands coming out with SATA versions?

Don't bother with SATA unless you have a motherboard with an Intel chipset or one of few PCI cards that support SATA ATAPI drives.

well I do happen to have an intel board now (abit is7-g with the 865 chipset) and then I was planning on upgrading next year with Intel as well

What Plextor doesn't tell you is that most, of not all, SATA controllers are untested with optical drives. Most problems will be with software and utilities, firmware flashing and similar tasks. Plain reading and burning should work fine on most controllers.

At present, there is only ONE advantage to a SATA burner, and that's the lack of any limitations imposed by sharing an IDE channel with another drive.

It is if you wish to use both drives at the same time.

Thanks everybody for all the help! Really appreciate it.

If I was interested in buying one in a 1-2 months, is the plextor the only one I should waiting for? Any other cool ones on the horizon?

Lastly, when you mentioned problems with firmware updates, etc., is that really still an issue?

If I remember right, MSI and BenQ also have SATA DVD writers in the works. Then again, they might be waiting for better motherboard support.

Hmm...well, I guess my other question is when is there going to be better mobo support? =)
