Poll: 8X Memorex: Prodisc R03 (+R) or Ritek G05 (-R)?

Postby VEFF on Mon Oct 25, 2004 2:08 pm

Anyone have experience or an opinion on either of these?

PRODISC.R03 (sold as Memorex 8X DVD+R)
or
Ritek G05 (sold as Memorex 8X DVD-R)

I need some blanks and have decided to get one of these.
Which would you get?

I will either get a Benq 1620, PX-716A or Toshiba 5372 (due to 5X DL).
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D
Plextor PX-716A TLA0304
Plextor PX-716A same TLA

I'm not sure how Memorex's Ritek discs are, but the ones sold by Ridata have not impressed me. For personal stuff, I use Memorex's CMC and Ricoh manufactured DVD+R and DVD-R discs. They've served me well.

Thanks a lot Ian!

If only I could know if one was more likely to be OCable to 16X?

The hard part, often, is not knowing which ones you will get, unless one has bought them in the past and knows the different spindle colors product codes etc.

Normally I would wait but $19 or $20 + tax for 50 Memorex 8X is nice, especially without the headache of rebates and time spent filling the forms out etc..
Maybe I'll resist until I buy a drive, so I know which media can be burned at 16X

The BenQ DW1620 works very well with Prodisc R03 media. Nothing seems to work that well with Ritek G05 media, and don't expect it to overclock to 12x or 16x, when most drives can't even get it to burn right at 8x :o

I just don't like Prodisc... something about them rubs me the wrong way, but I can't put my finger on it.

Thanks dolph!

I bought and used some 2X Prodisc DVD-Rs way back when.
My DRU-500A didn't have a problem with them, but I have very little experience with the brand other than that.

This was when it made sense to buy DVD media online due to retail store pricing be more than twice as high.

I was hoping to get something that can be burned at 12 or 16X, but mty choice of which media to buy is complicated by three things:
1) I don't even know which of the three burners I will get.
I guess DL media will be too expensive until sometime after 8X DL burners
come out, so having a 5X DL burner vs. a 4X won't mean much...
2) Not knowing whether I'll get CMC or Prodisc if I buy Memorex 8X +Rs.
3) Not necessarily being able to find out which burner burns which media at which speed, even once I decide on one, especially the Toshiba which nobody seems to have bought or tried.
Burners only:
Pioneer DVR-115D
Pioneer DVR-111D

I've had really good luck with Memorex 8x DVD+R (Prodisc R03) but I cannot remember if my 712A burned them at 12x or not. I will pick some up the next time I am out and see what kind of burn speeds I get.

Take care,

Thanks MadBurner!
Sounds good!

Circuit City had a great deal, but they sold out pretty quickly.

Amazon has velocity 100 packs of 8X DVD+R for $29.99 with free shipping.
Someone received MCC discs!!!

However, since I want to burn at 16X and will probably not be getting a DVR-108 which can burn at 16X with NIL's hacked firmware, I may want to wait till 16X discs go on sale.

Yeah, I'm still waiting for my shipment of Velocity discs. The CD-Rs that I received were Prodisc so who knows what I will receive.
