BenQ DW1620pro - 4x DL writing speeds

Postby Ian on Thu Oct 28, 2004 10:26 am

It looks like the rumor was true about the DW1620 getting 4x DVD+R DL writing speeds. According to this press release, you're going to get it in the form of the DW1620pro:

Hopefully BenQ releases a free upgrade for the DW1620 as well.

No, I meant the DW1620. While I doubt they will, BenQ could easily say "buy the new drive if you want 4x DL speeds".

Good question. I emailed BenQ USA about it, but I don't expect a reply. If I have time later, I'll email my contact at BenQ's HQ.

"BenQ's 16X DVD rewritable drive will be available on the market end of October 2004"

They better hurry...there's only three days left.
I think I've found my next DVD writer and it comes with Nero 6 Suite...not some crappy Nero Express!

Good news. Here's what our contact at BenQ said:

It's true that BenQ is working for the 4x DL writing firmware for DW1620. After firmware upgraded, the specification of it (DW1620) is the same as DW1620 Pro which is going to launch next month.

Apart from the 4x DL and bundle software (Nero Suite), the retail packing is the only difference between DW1600 and DW1620 Pro. The production for DW1620 will be stopped once DW1620 Pro is ready.

Consider to the DW1620 users, there is a FREE firmware for such upgrade
which likes the FREE firmware for DW1600 upgrade to DW1620. In a word, both DW1600 and DW1620 users can enjoy the new specification (4x DL) of DW1620 Pro via an easy FREE firmware upgrade.

When the DW1620 Pro comes out with the Nero pkg, will it include the most recent version (6.6.0.1) & not be a 30 day trial like most other "pkg deals" are. I currently have 6.6.0.0 on my computer now but cannot upgrade to the latest version. :(

Also, where can I get the firmware flasher for BenQ drives. Just recently started became interested in the DW1620 and haven't looked around much on this drive compared to the NEC ND-3500A. ** Does anyone know how much the Pro version will cost as well?

30 day trial? I don't think I've ever seen a trial of Nero bundled with a drive. An OEM version yes.. trial no. As far as upgrades go, if the drive comes with Nero 6.x you should be able to upgrade to Nero 6.6.

It isn't surprising you can't upgrade from 6.6.0.0. That's the pre-release version that was given out to editors. Uninstall it and install the latest version from Ahead's website.

Ian, I used the Clean Tool Nero provides and wiped out 6.6.0.0. I then downloaded the newest version, but on Nero Vision Express pkg (NVE3014) I get an error halfway thru the setup. Here is what the error says: Error during installation of component "NeroPhotoSnap". Any suggestions for d/l NVE pkg.

No idea. If you haven't already, I'd ask in the Ahead Software section of our forum. Hopefully Craig will have an easy fix for you.

Someone posted in the other forum that the new firmware will have some more testing tools like no other burner. I got the feeling they were talking about something more then the TE/FE tool. Anyone have any idea what these new tools may be?

PlexTools can test for this as well. Keep in mind that this tests the media BEFORE writing.

But here's what another frequent poster posted over at the other forum after someone posted the TE/FE tool:

keep a lookout...this is just the begining of a whole new series of tools....if i am not wrong...7 more to go...

I wouldn't be surprised. The documentation for QScan mentions that FE/TE testing for CD-R/RW media is coming as well.

so far the smart scan function is not all that great. won't recommend certain speeds on some media that the drive and firmware are able to do. might have to do some of the longer test to get a better evaluation of the media.
