How much is my Maxell(Japan) 4x DVD-R media worth?

Postby hrbngr on Mon Nov 29, 2004 12:19 pm

hello,

I can't seem to find a fair online price for this media, Meritline had them for $1.15 per disc, but obviously that's too much.

I went a little crazy and purchased 300 discs 4 months ago, now I would like to sell some of them, but can't seem to find good pricing.

here are pics of the 15pks: http://www.hrbngr.com/dvfiles.html

the media code is MXL RG02, also here are comments on the media at videohelp.com: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?s ... 0#comments

Even if I can't find a current price that reflects the availability of quality 8x/16x media, is there other 4x media still for sale of similar high quality that would be a good comparison? TY? Ricoh?

Current super-sales aside, 4x media is being dumped by almost all media makers at fire-sale prices. I think the most recent news article mentioned something like $.13 per disc from the factory. RG02 is certainly good media, but not easily over-speeded to 8x, so I'd not want to pay more than $.25 per disc for it.
Current drives running here: ND-2500A, ND-3500A, ND-3520A,

I would seriously call into question the validity of your source. 4x DVDRs are cheap, but only downgrade and crappy chinese/hongkong media hits the $0.13 USD range... and only in 1,000,000pc volumes really. But I'd suppose you'd need to do a little digging to know that... or be directly involved with the industry of course

Came back from Staples, where they have the Maxell 15pk +-R for sale for $8.96. My local Staples in Central NJ has the 8x varieties. While $0.60 is not that much of a bargain, but these are MXLRG03(-R) or MAXELL02 (+R).
They come with those short CD/DVD Label pen in the box.... I thought it was quite a bargain....
Not all Staples are selling the 8x though... the 2 Staples I check in NYC do not carry the 8x.... worth taking a look...

Office Depot has 50 pack spindles of DVD-R 4x speed for $19.97, no limit. Of course you need to purchase the spindles that say "MADE IN JAPAN". The "MADE IN TAIWAN" spindles are RITEK G04 discs.

My 2 spindles media code is MXL RG02. :D

Thank you for the tip. I stopped by the local Office Depot just now and they had both the Maxell DVD+R and DVD-R for sale at that price. All the 4x Maxell of both formats were Made in Taiwan. The 50 packs of the 8X Maxell DVD-R use the same exact UPC code as the 4x and there was one there. It was Made in Japan and scanned through Kprobe as MXL RG03 just now. So if your local Office Depot has the 8X Maxell DVD-R that are replacing the 4X (same UPC as indicated above), you can get them for 19.97 plus tax.

Guys,

thanks for the replies. So, even if I matched the .40/disc price for the Maxell 8x media, it would still be a pretty difficult to sell them. Man...I knew I purchased too many discs...

Does anyone have any idea if the Maxell MXL RG02 would be good for archiving data? At this point, I think that I may never run out of discs.

One other question, if I do plan to sell the discs, are there any other forums besides here where I might find ppl looking for these discs, otherwise I suppose I should try Ebay.

hoxlund,

i am betting that some ppl that have read this post are thinking the same thing. :)

the thing is I can't seem to cut down is the dvd backup process any less.

orig --> rip w/dvdcrypter to drive d:
dvdshrink --> to ~4.6GB folder on c:
IMGTool Classic to .iso file on d:
burn to disc w/RecordNow

I would love to try DVD ReBuilder, but I am guessing that would take even longer, right?

My main problem is dvdshrink deep analysis and AEC...I almost wish there were a good way to batch process multiple backups at once.

why wouldn't you just dvdshrink to rip, shrink and encode all in the same process?

i guess what im asking is why dvd decrypt it then dvdshrink it? dvdshrink does it all in one step

DVD Rebuilder takes the longest, but the results are better than the transcoders like DVDShrink.

if you have a fast cpu then dvd rebuilder doesn't take that long. in my opinion the quality is great compared to dvd shrink. my 3.0ghz pc takes only 2 -2 1/2 hours to process compared to my 2.4 ghz pc that takes 5 hours or more.

i've had to use a combo tutorials from doom9 and from some other site that i can't remember. what do you need help with? all the programs you need for dvdrb can be downloaded from doom9.

Yeah... people aren't too bright sometimes are they? No one seems to figure out what I'm involved with either

I mean common, do people think I BURN hundreds of thousands of DVDRs a month?

I used the tut that came with the program, with the exception of setting the avs advanced to also de interlace with decomb.dll. Also, I have it set to do a 5 pass. I have also found that for any movie under 2 hours, it is not worth it to use dvd rb. I do love the proggie for stuff that dvdshrink cant do.

lmfao i was kidding around with hoxlund....sheesh!!!!

dvdrb is a great program in my opinion compared to dvd shrink. don't get me wrong because dvd shrink is good too but the quality is much better with dvdrb. i use dvdrb for the movies that are my all time favorites.

Well I hope so  I mean, he's flying his own flag as an avatar even... I at least go for a little subtlety in my hints (I'm *not* a pirate... but Hoxlund's terms at least).

As for me, I use DVD Shrink when doing that sort of thing, but it's pretty rare these days. Most of the DVDs I burn are test data discs done through Nero CD/DVD Speed.

There is one tutorial on the doom9 forums for DVD Rebuilder that is pretty detailed. It isn't that complicated to set up at all and it is one click from that point on.
