First Benq 1620 "hiccup"

Postby jberry on Thu Dec 02, 2004 10:46 am

This is only a small problem....drive is superb..DL and all..amazing.

So what is wrong....well I have some Maxell dvd-RWs 2X speed....if I use the 1620 to burn I do not get the 2x option..I get 1 and 2.4. 6 2.4x burns failed (i.e. they burn but do not play). Now if I try my LG 4120b I get speed options of 1 and 2...burn at 2 and ALL OK.

now this is just a small issue, only reason I am posting is that I am curious as to why the Benq wants to burn at 2.4x (no option for 2x)...makes bad discs....just curious....the 1620 is excellent though

Probably don't have the Maxell discs in their firmware media table. Can you do a dump from DVD Identifier (dvdidentifier.cdfreaks.com) and post it here?

The BenQ DW1620 doesn't support DVD-RW writing at 2x, only 2.4x. Actually, I never even found any discs that would burn at 1x, but I guess you did. What is the meda code on the discs?

I am at work now....will post later....

I did check when I saw the bad burns....media is TDK (Even though label is Maxell)...but I will post the official look see at the media later.....but it is definately TDK That I know

if it is not in the media table, one would think that the drive would default to 1x "to be safe" these -RWs are about 4 months old

I doubt the media isn't in the firmware... but it's worth sending a note to BenQ about I think.

yep....2.4x for Maxell DVD-RWs on the 1620.

I remember dvdinfo pro saying they were TDK discs....but I will post the complete media info when I get home

is 2.4x really a +R thing?

strange that LG would get it right and Benq not...good to have 2 burners though

BenQ isn't even the first to burn DVD-RWs at 2.4x... i believe BTC released a drive that could do it as well. The difference in burn time is pretty significant, so I'm happy with it :)

yes...you wouldn't think 2 vs 2.4 would be much.....but it shaves a few mins off...no good for a bad burn though :D

Hrm... I'm thinking that scan wasn't done in the BenQ DW1620 :P

Unfortunately, I don't have one of those discs at my place, so I can't try it out myself. Write BenQ a letter to their support section, and ask them why it isn't working. Hopefully they will add better support for it.
