Shelf life of BLANK CD-Rs?

Postby VEFF on Thu Dec 16, 2004 11:32 am

There is a hot deal of 270 52X CD-Rs for $26.99 with free shipping and no rebates.
I had been thinking recently whether my existing supply of blank CD-Rs were still okay, since some are probably two years old?

Does anyone know what the shelf life is for BLANK CD-Rs.
I'd rather pay a bit more and not have my data compromised due to potential dye issues with old CD-Rs...

Well, this article says that the ESTIMATED shelf life, accordng to
media MANUFACTURERS, is 5 - 10 years.
I don't know how accurate that is, but I should be okay with my large existiing stash then...

Depends on various storage conditions. The main aspect is the dye quality.

The truth is no one knows. Infact is there something as shelf life ?

There should be something like shelf life based on the dye. However the main question here is how much does manufactureing quality and storeing conditions influence this ? Very much I can say !
I have read about media (unburned) going bad in 2 years time and I have seen disc's showeing hardly any influence. (TY 7 years old and still burnable ).
