In House Review - Pioneer DVR-A08XLA 16x DVD±RW

Postby Ian on Fri Dec 17, 2004 1:44 pm

CDRLabs finishes up the week with an in depth look at Pioneer's new double layer DVD burner, the DVR-A08XL. This enhanced version of the popular DVR-108 features some of the fastest DVD reading and writing speeds available. The drive is capable of 16x DVD±R and 4x DVD±RW writing speeds and has a maximum DVD read speed of 16x. More importantly, it's one of the first drives to feature 4x DVD+R DL writing speeds. Along with a more contemporary design, the DVR-A08XL also includes features like 32x CD writing speeds, 40x CD read speeds and reduced operating noise, thanks to Pioneer's Quiet Drive technology.

In this review we'll take a look at some of the features found on the DVR-A08XL and see how it compares to some of the 16x DVD±RW drives from the competition. Can the DVR-A08XL deliver the performance and features that we've come to expect from Pioneer? You'll have to read the review to find out.

I had originally planned to publish this review last week. Instead, I went back an and reran the DVD writing tests using the new 1.18 firmware. Some of the results might surprise you. If you have any comments or questions about this review or the Pioneer DVR-A08XL, please post them in the forum by clicking the link below.

Nice review,as always Ian. One thing though... the readback tests were on a Lite-On 166S DVDROM,right? It has been written as a Pioneer 166S..

Hello!

Nice review again, Ian :)

You write that you test the drive with 1.14 and 1.18, do you made the write-quality-tests with 1.18 with all media?

Yes, the +R and -R tests were done with the 1.18 firmware. I didn't see the point of redoing all of the tests since there weren't changes in the other areas (not to mention, I'd spent enough time with the drive).

It´s ok, the write-quality-tests are the only tests that´s with FW 1.18 important for me
