Problem (caused by) Pioneer DVR-A08XL?

I have what I think is a problem caused by my new Pioneer DVR-A08XLB -
I have a Epox 8RDA6+PRO with a Maxtor 160gig (Master) and Lite-On LTR-52327S (Slave) on IDE1. On IDE2 I want to have Pioneer DVR-A08XLB (Master) and WesternDigital 60gig (Slave). Whenever I connect the Pioneer burner, the WesternDigital drops to PIO mode. Everything else is fine - Maxtor is UDMA6, LiteOn UDMA2, Pioneer UDMA4. The WD should be UDMA5. If I remove the Pioneer burner, everything goes back to normal. I had a Pioneer reader before 104s, and it worked fine in this setup. What's really crazy is this happens even if I move the WD to IDE1. They just don't seem to like each other. I tried both the Windows IDE drivers, the Nvidia IDEs, running latest bios in everything. For the Pioneer I have tried 1.14 hacked and 1.118. Doesn't seem to affect the Maxtor at all. So basically I can't use Pioneer burner with a WD600BB (I have tried two!! - same thing). I have done the install/uninstall of the IDE drivers. I have deleted the stuff in the registry and redeteced UDMA. The bios at start up sees the WD as ATA100. Force ASPI has been done. Turned on and off the quiet utility. The burner works fine, just kills the HD no matter if it is on IDE 1 or 2, Master or Slave. Has anyone seen this? I am about to throw this in a firewire case and be done with it.

Nevermind.
My AthlonXP 2500+ was overclocked to 3200+
Once I dropped the fsb back to 166 I was back in business.
Amazing I could P95 loop for hours.
I wonder what it was? I also know that I have the longest rounded IDE cables you can buy...

27 inches comes to mind for ide cables

anything longer and i think the signal degrades dramitcally, like as in its un-useable

Actually hoxlund I think u maybe right.
Even after I turned the system speed down, I was switching drives today and noticed that a old 10gig (I save shows to) dropped to PIO. I am thinking that the combo of long IDE cables and removable drive bays might be killing my UDMA.

Funny though it only happens with the Pioneer DVR connected. If I unplugg it, everything works fine...?

its probably that one added device just hinders the connection with the long cable

just curious, why in the hell do you need such a long cable

in my hox box even i don't need long cables, and my 5.25" bays are totally seperate space wise from my mobo part of my case:

I have one of the old Antec tall tower cases with five 5.25 bays up top and the mobo section down below. The IDE ports are at the low right of the mobo. I'm gonna take the HDDs out of their caddies and use some shorter ATA cables. Hopefully this fixes my issue... The A08 burns great so far!
