Pioneer Announces The DVR-A09XL

Postby Ian on Tue Jan 04, 2005 4:43 pm

Taken from here:

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/p ... 25,00.html

The DVR-A09XL high speed DVD burner introduced today by Pioneer enables computer users to record data, photos and video onto DVD-R, DVD-RW, +R and +RW discs with ease. It also works with dual layer discs, increasing the capacity of a disc from 4.7 to 8.5 gigabytes for even more storage space.

The DVR-A09XL offers many technologies unique to Pioneer, including Quiet Drive for minimal operating noise; Liquid Crystal Control for optimum recording quality; Precision Recording to minimize the effects of long term deterioration of re-recordable discs due to repeated writing; and an Ultra Dynamic Resonance Absorber to reduce vibrations during high-speed recording and playback of discs. The DVR-A09XL comes packaged with high quality software that enables the user to edit home movies, burn music, create photo slideshows and back up data with ease. The DVR-A09XL will begin shipping this month.

Come on Pioneer.. where are the drive's specs?

Specs unknown, should I wait for the Pioneer or the new LiteOn? This will be my first DVD burner so I want to start off on the right foot. I have a LiteOn CD burner and have had 0 problems with it. I've just read were the Pioneer may be a little better as far as quality is concerned. Any thoughts?

Pioneers tend to be fairly unequaled in high quality -R writing. Otherwise, they're just a very well built drive. I.e., their +R writing is ok but nothing spectacular. (I have an A07XL and love it)

LiteOns are very good drives, and in some ways better (i.e., PI/PO scanning although the Pioneers are starting to be good for that too). However, I personally think of LiteOns as "good for the price, but there's better" sort of drives.

I'd say wait for the specs, and maybe reviews.

Why, oh why, won't Pioneer make one of their drives burn DVD-RAM? I'd definitely buy 1, and maybe 2, immediately. #-o I hate that I'm waiting for an LG-4163 in black to become available....

Under *NO* circumstances would I recommend a LiteOn DVD Burner. Their writing quality is so below average, and they aren't any cheaper then BenQ drives, which are MUCH better made, and can do better quality testing then them as well (with more options).

Ok, so no LiteOn. What about the new NEC drive? It looks like a decent burner.

The NEC 3500a isn't bad, I use it myself sometimes on occasion.

This is getting off topic though (partially my fault)

It's nice to see the Pioneer DVR-109 finally announced (or the XL version at least). Pretty close to when I originally said it would happen too

In the past the NEC have not a good FW-support, without Herrie´s FW´s many users would kick their NEC in the trash.

And an other point is, that NEC-drives are very bad readers,. If you have a good DVD-reader and if you use DVD+R you can go with a NEC.

If you prefer DVD-R then go with Pioneer or LG. Both drives are better readers than the NEC, too.

If the specs are as good or better than the 716, after the whole hardware debacle, I'm picking this drive up.

I was disappointed in the NEC ND-3500's ability to read. However, I put my Toshiba SD-M1712, a greater reader, back in so I'm OK. The only other possible drawback of the NEC is the lack of bitsetting/booktyping. But once again, I'm OK because all my DVD players are quite recent and can play DVD+Rs and DVD+RWs.

DVD±R 16x
DVD+R DL 6x
DVD-RW 6x
DVD+RW 4x
CD-R 40x
CD-RW 24x

Later the drive will be upgradable via firmware to:

CD Freaks has some rumored specs for the A09..

DVD+R DL 6x
DVD+R 16x
DVD+RW 8x
DVD-R DL 6x
DVD-R 16x
DVD-RW 6x
CD-R 40x
CD-RW 24x

The thought is that the Buffalo DVM-RDM16FB is based on the DVR-A09XL. If it is, Pioneer has given the drive a makeover.

According to PC Watch, the 8x DVD+RW and 6x DVD-R DL will be added via firmware:

Hello!

The specs are ok, but not a hammer. I wonder why Pioneer have so low CD-R-speeds.

The Buffalo looks like a little different to other Pioneer-drives, it have no airflow-holes (don´t know the neglish word for it)
Benq DW 1640 and 1650 , Plextor PX-755, Pioneer BDR-208 and 209D, LG GH24NSC0, LG BH16NS40 and 16NS55, Liteon ihas 124F and 324F, Pioneer DVR-215 and S21, Samsung SH-224DB and 224GB, and some more

I would agree that Plextor is the biggest disappointment, especially for the extra money they want. Pioneer is catching up though, as a matter of fact, all the big names are guilty of rushing they're semi-tested products to market. THe whole practice is pissing me off more and more each day.
First, gaming software, then Video cards, Intel processors, and now with ever increasing frequency, DVD burners. Every time you flash your drive you risk ending up with a doorstop, and that just sucks.

Does anyone know when it will show up in store in the US and how much it will cost? I know it says it's going to ship this month, but I'm not sure how long it takes for them to show up in stores after they are shipped.

Thank you :)

Expect it in Japan any day now, expect it in USA about 1 month from then. Expect it in Canada about 2-3 weeks after it shows up in the U.S.

FYI: Shipping via boat takes ~1 month from asia to North America.
