Digital-Audio Cable for DVR-108

Where can I get a cable to connect the DVR-108's 4-pin digital-audio terminal to the 2-pin digital-audio terminal of sound-cards such as the Audigy 2 ZS?

That 4 pin connector isn't a digital audio out. In fact, the drive doesn't support digital audio.

So what is that connector for? I had thought it was a digital-audio connector based on its description in this product review article.

Odd.. there are two little connectors on the left hand side of their drive. The blue one is normally on most Pioneer drives and is used for factory testing. But the white one is new and is not on the retail version of the drive (the A08) or the Pioneer clones I've seen. I'm guessing its there because they had an early engineering sample? Or maybe its because they use the same picture for both the Pioneer 108 and ASUS 1604P review?

You just answered my question: it's the blue connector in the review article's picture, which comes in white color in the production models as showed in this picture, that I was referring to.

I was wondering about this drive myself.......if it doesn't have SPDIF on it then how do you get 5.1 playback out of this unit. How is it Hoxlund that someone would be able get digital audio quality with a soundblaster ZS. How is your dvr-108 set up?

Optical drives transfer the digital 5.1 audio over the same IDE cable as all the other digital data from the drive. Optical drives can also transfer 2-channel digital audio over the IDE cable. SPDIF is not needed for digital audio.

So if I get a soundcard I can hook up the drive to the motherboard with the IDE cable and get 5.1 audio with no cables going into the soundcard at all?

Yup, that's what he's saying. Just make sure that your DVD playback software supports 5.1. A lot of the bundled stuff only does 2 channel.

Thx for the replies guys........Do you know if Nero Showtime supports DD5.1...and that this should work with a SBA ZS and IDE cable only...?

Showtime does support Dolby Digital 5.1, but you have to pay extra to enable it for some versions. It's been a while since I looked at Nero and I won't attempt to explain (or even understand) their product differentiation strategy, but suffice it to say that there are differences between European/American/international versions and OEM/retail versions. Some require purchase of an additional plug-in to enable the 5.1 support. If you have the full-retail American version, I'm pretty sure 5.1 is already enabled.
