Hrm... normally Verbatim is the first, but I'm wondering if that will be true this time. I doubt even us reviewers will get to play with any media for several months, and it probably won't hit the shelves until maybe the end of the year. Just my guess.

Well verbatim again was first when it comes to sending media to drive manufacturers.
NEC 3520 only has MCC dual layer strategies in there 1.04/1.05 firmwares and according to some rumours the Plextor beta firmware also supports MCC/MKM only.
Also the MCC/MKM is the only media some of my sources have seen arround.
Also there is another point that MCC/MKM/Verbatim are ahead of the others.
What your seeing here is a fully designed possible retail Verbatim package !!

So most of this media is just promotion/prototype crap.

Biggest surprise is JVC. So are they going to make this themselves or will they let TY do the job for dual layer -R media.

Are you sure it'll be TY and not Maxell?

I suspect that Microsoft would "appreciate" Ritek's packaging and color even more.

Verbatim is notorious for being overzealous about their ship dates. Given, they might ship a few discs to drive manufacturers or a few select retailers (like Best Buy and their DL discs) but usually the media shows up months after its supposed to.

I went round and round about this with Verbatim about their 32x CD-RW and 4x DVD+RW discs. Not even the vendors on their website had them in stock, months after they were supposed to ship.

Maxell is just as bad.... going by their original promised ship dates, I should have had Maxell DVD+R9 media like 2-3 months ago... and I'm still waiting for it.

At least they came through with their 16x DVD+Rs... even though they did turn out to be made in Taiwan PHILIPSC16 code media made by CMC with Fuji's dye.

I gotta admit it was funny to hear the reaction from Maxell when I told them that their 16x media was made with one of their biggest competitors dye types

Of course Maxell DOES have their own 16x DVD+Rs and 16x DVD-Rs... but they are hard to get in North America

:o Pardon me. I know Maxell and FUJI seems to a hot issue over the river.
However we are forgetting that it might be that on the dye bussiness the 2 compannies have no problem with each other. If maxell had to choose to buy non japanese dye or japanese dye technology then tell me which would they choose if everything was the same. It has 2 be reall war between the compannies befor Maxell would go with a non japanese dye.

In other words it's not all black and white. Think blue ray and DVD recordables.
Pioneer is in the -R camp
Philips is in the +R camp
these 2 arce competting with each other and have pulled allmost anything out to make the other format bad however in the next round(Blu Ray) the compannies again are very willing to share information.

Well, I can only speak about what the reps for Maxell are like over here in Canada... I'm sure the people who made the decision in Maxell knew exactly what they were doing.

And it *IS* nice to see Pioneer and Philips playing nicely together again

Funny that suddenly all compannies are able to make -R dual layer media. Why +R media still is a problem except for a few.
Know I know it might have to with inversed stack vs the other technique but still I have my doubts about the initial quality of some of these disc's.

hmm since no TY is in the dual layer column the maxell option Dolphinius Rex gave might actually be a option for the JVC disc's.

Also makes me wonder if TDK invested everything themselves or decided to develop something a long with CMC. From a economical point of view it might be more wise for TDK to completely let CMC produce this media for them unless it becomes a real succes from the start unlike Dual Layer DVD+R.

It helps that Maxell already makes stuff for JVC pretty commonly too... unfortunately, even if my reps DID know, they aren't allowed to tell me (and I doubt they know).
