Firmware Version

I've got a Liteon 48246S and would like to know how do I check to see what version firmware is the drive using, do I need to use some type of tool ?

The easiest way to find out is to use whatever burning software you have installed, like Nero or ECDC/EMC. Otherwise, download Nero InfoTool or another similar program for this purpose.

you can use Nero InfoTool

also, lots of burning software will tell you that when you look for Drive Properties or something similar.
