Max possible (not current, but possible) speed for D/L?

Postby VEFF on Sat Jan 22, 2005 4:58 pm

We all knew in advance that 52X (56X in a few cases) was going to be the max write speed for CD-R, 16X for 4.37 GB DVD SL media.

How about DVD+R9 (Dual Layer)?
Has anyone determined what it will be yet?

Officially there is no such final spec.
A lot of manufacturers thought that 8x would be the end. However the actuall companies who invented the stuff are not so sure about that one. They think that higher speeds might actually be possible. At least that was the info a half year ago. And I haven't seen any updates officially or unofficially on that.

From a technical point of view it's possible to make 16x disc's if your writer can still make a difference between the layers. Have no problems with supporting that high speeds.(however single layer is allready problematic at 16x) and you can find right dyes. (This last one might actually be a bit more tricky.

Thanks RJW!
I guess we shall have to wait and see then...

Dula Layer media is still too expensive for my purposes anyway; I can get by with single layer media for the time being.
