1 1/2 - 2 feet of snow next 24hrs + 50 MPH winds

Postby VEFF on Sat Jan 22, 2005 9:27 am

About three or so days ago they said 3 - 6 inches to maybe a foot of snow this weekend. The forescaster said he was leaning towards the lighter forecast.

Then yesterday they said 12 - 15

Now they say 18 - 24 inches of snow in 24 hours
And they expect 50 MPH winds, so there will be serious blizzard conditions
It is a whopping 3.9 degrees F right now.
Also, the high temperatures for almost ALL of next week have now been lowered.
Looks like the faucet and heat will have to stay on as a precaution.

Time to buy some salt.
Already had flashlight, water and candles in the house.

They said we may even get some "snow thunder"; never heard of that before...

Good thing there is staples.com, since I need/want something from the sale starting tomorrow.

Wow! I better go check my local forecast, since I'm not all that far away from you. I have heard a bunch of announcements about what to do in the event of a winter emergency on the radio, but I figured it was just the typical "storm" hype.

By the way, salt won't do you a bit of good below about 20 degrees or so, much less 3.9 degrees.

We just got hit with that storm. More like 4-10" around here. The roads weren't that bad this morning when I went snowboarding, but they're getting worse due to the winds.

Right, this is salt but with additives (Dowflake (R)) which (quoting almost verbatim "speeds up the melting process even at - 25 F").

I decided not to go to my parents' place after all, because they don't have time to pick me up and if I drive there, I will have to unblock my driveway when I go home, since I am sure the snow plows will leave a massive wall of snow (unavoidable) at the end of the drive; I will also have to clean the driveway itself and I would have to help my father with his driveway.
Keeping all that in mind, I wouldn't be done till late Sunday night; unless I stayed over an extra night and worked from my parents' home using remote access.
In any case, I am bunkering down and probably will be lucky if the side streets are passable late Sunday evening.

I actually tried to go to Staples. I turned around 90% of the way there, since traffic was moving slowly everywhere (already!! probably due to people making last minute preparations) and roads were already somewhat slick (due no doubt to bitter cold temps; 11 degrees right now) since I didn't want to get my 1 yr old car smashed up (again).

Time to watch some recorded TV shows on my new DVD recorder; I knew that thing would come in handy...

Good luck to everyone affected by this storm!!! DON'T TRY DRIVING IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO.
Not just because of the weather, but inevitably some drivers are stressed out by slow traffic and some will forget about the snow for a split second when they make an aggressive move...

I wish we could get only 10" at this point.
Then again, clearing the driveway is good exercise right!

They said that the 45 - 50 MPH winds will cause snow drifts up to 3 feet high in some spots.

PS: It is supposed to be a 'balmy' :) 35 degrees (originally said 40 a few days ago) by middle of next week.
Time to get the t-shirts out ;)

Just found this story on the storm:
http://www.cnn.com/2005/WEATHER/01/22/winter.storm.ap/index.html

This Northeastern US storm is apparently being referred to as the 'Blizzard of 2005' according to a post on one of the forums out there.

Insane! Just spoke to an aunt in Michigan, they have already had 8 inches of snow, and are expecting more. You guys are welcome to drop in at my place, 23 degrees C and climbing. Not a cloud in the sky!

Sure.
I am particularly looking to get rid of two snow piles (due to winds moving heavy snowfall around) that accumulated at the top of the backside of the roof.
Wish my roof were sloped more like some neighbors!

Also wish I had one of those 16' or 17' roof snow rakes!!!
The back of the house has a nice size deck attached to dining room that would make it easy to remove excess snow with ones of those rakes.

Got to love this stretch of cold weather!
It got to about 36 dergees F on Tuesday and it felt comfortably mild after
all the recent (well) below freezing days...

First they said highs in the 40s on Thursday and Friday (oir was it Wednesday and Thursday?); granted that was a week in advance; the highs have since been dramtically revised (20 or lower for the high today and tomorrow).
A little while ago they said Saturday's high was predicted to be mid 30s; that has already been revised to lower 30s.
I just want a few days of melting, so that the pile of snow on the roof that I couldn't reach (could only get to one opf the two big wind-swept piles) goes down by two or three inches (or more)...

Fortunately we have only had one day of snow (3 inches) since last weekened's blizzard...

It is supposed to be in the mid 30s next week, but Saturday was the one mostly sunny day coming up...

It is 9 degrees Fahrenheit as we speak.
Low expected to be 0 degees F tonight (without the windchill).

The winter started so mild and then we hit the deep freeze about two weeks ago.
