Plextor 716/716SA Booktype? (noob question)

Postby Jaybo on Fri Feb 18, 2005 8:28 am

Ok I am a noob, I admit it.

I bought the 716SA, got a Promise SATA controller listed as compatible, etc.

Running 1.04.

When I attempt to burn a self-authored dvd+r in NeroVision I can't get it to read in any machine other than my PC or Xbox.

I thought maybe this 'booktype' setting may change it. It did somewhat. I could suddenly play it in my new style PS2, yet it refuses to play in my Magnovox DVD recorder for my TV (my main DVD player).

Every single dvd I have ever thrown in that thing has played fine. Now, I took the exact same image and settings and burned it on my Opterite DVDRW, with flawless results.

I should also mention that when installing games and such with the SATAII 150 TX4 card on UDMA4 for the drive it always corrupts. Setting the port manually every boot to UDMA2 never corrupts.

I don't understand how I can get this burner to make a compatible disc like every other burner I have ever owned.

Any suggestions? It is the exact same as the normal 716 drive, it identifies itself as such - just a different interface.

a little patience, man!

how about media? what did you use?
maybe you should try other media.
high quality media if you can find it - Taiyo Yuden Made in Japan.

maybe you burned it too fast, should try a lower speed ?

I burned it at max, and I have been using whatever TDK uses, it is rated at 4x but I am sure it is burning it at 8x.

Now, if I burn the same image at 8x in my Optorite, I have no problem.

I have had nothing but issues with this drive but I am sure it is just a setting I am unaware of.

Ah I saw a link to 1.04a firmware and now my UDMA4 setting works! Sweet.

I still can't read any discs in my Magnovox DVD recorder though.

accoring to Plextor's website the only difference between 1.04 and the updated 1.04 is updated motherboard compatibility.

Yeah I just said, now you can have it set to UDMA 4 without problem. Many had this issue - I had to set it to UDMA 2 to get it to not corrupt on reads.
