media made in japan

Are there any big name media companies (Sony, Fuji, Memorex) that still make their media in Japan anymore? Which media made in Taiwan is still decent?

If I were you, I wouldn't make my dicision just on where the disc are made. Got a friend who upon doing tons of research on the web and he would only buy discs made in Japan, I gave him some of my Sony disc which are made in Taiwan and now he would only buy Sony's!!! 8)

Just go out and get few brands, be it made in Japan or Taiwan and use them on your burner and you would know which ones are the best for your burner......

I think there is no such thing as best disc for every burner out there, just some disc just works better than the other....oh...don't forget to get those with "limited" lifetime warranty, and basically stick with Hitachi/Maxell,Verbatim/Mitsubishi,Fuji,Sony and their co-branded oems and you will be fine.....

There's still some level of certainty that any random Japanese media will be better than any random Taiwanese media, but there are always exceptions.

If you look around, you should still be able to find quite a bit of Made in Japan Fuji media. They're even finally starting to sell some MIJ +R media. I think SOME (rare) TDK media is also MIJ, although it's usually TY rebrands and not "true" MIJ TDK. (most TDK media is now made in Taiwan by CMC. If you're lucky, you'll get decent media with TTG01 [I think?] media codes) If you're not as lucky, you'll get CMC media codes.

The best Made in Taiwan media I've found are the Verbatim DataLifePlus discs, and/or the DigitalMovieReel. MCC media codes and pretty good media overall.

I would avoid ANYTHING Memorex repackages anymore. Which sucks to say, I found some oooooold (1998-era) Memorex CDRs (stuff I burned when I got my first Ricoh 6200 burner), they were TY and had C1/C2 scans that would rival anything burned today!

I just bought a 50-pack Verbatim DVD-R 8X at Staples this morning for $68.35 (including taxes) and it has a $35 rebates, so the total cost is $33.35 Canadian or about USD $27. It's made in Taiwan with media code MCC 02RG20 and I must say, physically these discs are much better quality than those Maxell DVD-R 8X which I bought from FutureShop last week also for the same price (made in Japan with media code MXL RG03). I've a Sony burner and Sony Tech support told me that their burner works best with Verbatim(Mitsubishi Chemical), Sony, Maxell(Ricoh JPN), Hitachi(Maxell) and Taiyo Yuden.

Given the price of these discs are these low, it's best to stick with the big guns

Add Maxell 4x, 8x and 16x DVD+R to that list (MAXELL 001, 002 and 003 respectively). The 4x and 8x media codes are currently available in the US. There is TDK 8x DVD-R MIJ available in Asia only (TTG02), as well as the hard-coat 4x DVD-R and +R (TTG01 and TDK001). TTG01 hardcoat+UV guard media MIJ is available in the US but is very expensive.

I don't know where you are located but in case you are in U.S. there is sale this week in Office Depot for Maxell DVD+/-R made in Japan for $35 for 2 packa of 50 (total 100).

Edit: Both Maxell DVD+R & DVD-R are made in Japan since I just bought both format.
