Office Max has DVD +/-RW from Micro Advantage Model No. 16DDVDRW-A13 for $39 flat with no rebate involve. This drive has spec as follow:

Writing Speed : DVD+R at 16X
DVD-R at 8X
+/-RW at 4X
DVD+R (D/L) at 2.4

CD-R at 48X
CD-RW at 24X

These specification matches Sone DVD Burner Model No.710A. Does any one know who actually makes this drive?.

Have read a couple of threads that makes me think it's the AOpen- DUW1608.

Can anyone confirm the manufacture?

Hi BigMonkey; Yes you are may be right if you look in to 16X DVD drive picture of Aopen at Newegg.com this drive exactly matches Aopen with one minor change, the Aopen drive says writing CD-RW at 32X and this drive say 24X, otherwise look and all other specs are the same. I have not open the drive yet.

To confirm the maker of this Micro Advantage DVD 16X drive, I just opened it it is Aopen Model DUW 1608 drive. So being Aopen the $39 for the retail version of this drive is top deal and you can bit it.

Bought two and they are AOPEN 1608s fw 05/flashed to 07 and doing a check. Slower than the Pleex and NEC but great for $39 each.

ETP; I upgraded my self to A070G from Micro Advantage site, did some testing, the drive is friendly with +R format (burn some Maxell +R 8X at 12X) but nasty on -R format, also did the testing on transfer rate with Nero CD/DVD Speed with result kind of pyramid type the drive climb to 8.4X at first layer and drops to 4X at second.

Question; have tried to flash the drive with Aopen latest F/W which is duw1608_r107? I wonder if any one has done that, since the drive is Genuine Aopen may be we should flash it with Aopen F/W instead of M/A one. The minimum that will do make drive to be identified as Aopen duw1608.

TCAS/ This is a great reader! You may want to keep one for a reader.
PS/ you can use bin flash to erase your FW and load peanut butter in the drive.
