Postby jbmagicfan on Mon Mar 14, 2005 6:04 pm

i planning to get the Plextor 716a dvd writer? is there any problems with it?

and how do i check box to see what revision is on it? which revision on box shoudl i get?

also if i get a dvd writer, do you recommend to get a dvd rom seperate and use that for playing dvd movies and ripping cd?

or the dvd writer is good to use it for all things?

thanks

It will have the TLA # right on the box. This four digit # will tell you the revision of the drive and the firmware on it. For example a TLA # of 0304 would be drive revision 3 and firmware 1.04

I don't see a need for it unless you want to do direct disc copies or the DVD writer is slow at riping audio CD's or DVD movies (some are). Don't worry about "wearing out" your drive either. You'll probably upgrade before this happens.

I have not found one that is best at everything, but you'd probably be happy with the drives from Plextor, Pioneer, NEC and BenQ.

if you look through some more boxes of those you might find the version 3 drives, also they probably have overstock right above out of your reach, if you ask nicely one of the employees might be able to get some down for you

tell them hox sent you, he'll understand

I have the Plex 0203 and its perfect. Price was $79 after rebate. I hate rebates , but I wanted to give Plex a shot. Very nice drive and great software bundle.
But you missed the deal of a lifetime=$39 for a Micro Advantage retail pack at Office Max=Aopen 1608. Stop by and see if they still have any.
And I flashed my 3500 to 2.19 and 1608 to 080.
This is still a very fast reader and a good burner. My current setup is read with 1608 and burn with the 3500. This weekend I will try some more DVDs with the new firmware.
=D> :robot: This was a grand theft at $39 for a retail pack.
