Best DVD-ROM/Combo for ripping speed AND quality?

What is the best drive to use for ripping? I have heard that DVD burners are actually better at not getting read errors because they have more precise optics. Can you suggest which drive would be the best for speed and quality of ripping? I was using a liteon combo drive and it worked fast, but i have been getting read errors that i dont get when i use the same disc in my DVD recorder to rip, so I would like to replace it.

Depends.. how much do you want to spend? The NEC and Benq 1620 drives have a read speed hacked FW available, which allows them to read DVDs at 16X max, but you may not want to justify this investment. In that case,I'd recommend a L-O combo drive (again

), which will allow you to rip at speeds up to 16X, or even a Lite-On or Asus DVD-ROM drive, specifically the 166S/167T or the E616 from Asus.

ok thanks, I had a 48x liteon cd-rw before I got my NEC 2500A. I still use fujifilm TYs.

firmware hacks are big hits on the life expectancy of the drive

all my speed hacked drives ive had crapped out very fast

The NEC 3520A drive can do up 6-16x read speed with riplock-removed firmware for single layer discs only, for dual-layer video DVDs its max speed is 3-7x. I got a separate Aopen DVD-ROM drive to read up to 6-16x speed even on dual layer DVDs, however it does have to slow down on many discs around the layer change point, so the average rip speed for a ~8GB dual layer DVD is 10-11minutes, but thats almost twice as fast as other drives with a dual layer DVD.
